Combined around ~20k with ~3/4 towards engagement.

My ring was about 5k and I paid for all of it, but she repaid some of that in other ways like covering costs for a short vacation etc.

How did you spend 5k on YOUR ring? I'm genuinely curious. In my head it was always women have their expensive wedding jewelry and purses, men have their expensive watches.

For my ring I was just gonna spend 2k on 18k gold Cartier Love Ring or something fun like that and just be done with it.

2-3 carats is kind of gauche though

Just over $9k for her engagement ring, wedding band was a family heirloom so $0. My wedding band was ~$1200

I was inspired by a piece of Cartier High Jewelry and had a similar one (to my tastes) custom made by a local jeweler. Theirs was just a tad bit off of exactly what I wanted. We had a deal where she'd also get me a nice watch, but that will come a little later on.

Depends on the cut of the diamond though. A 1.5 carat emerald would be laughable, but yes 1.5 carat round or radiant can look decent i suppose. Wouldn't even consider anything under 2.5 though that's for damn sure, and that's only because (to your point) when you start talking 2.75 to 3.5 it's affecting day to day movement because it's so... well crass.
