I taught myself realestate investing. I had no choice. With the economy crashing in 09, I had to find some way to make money. I cashed out all the retirements and kids college funds, and sold everything I could to get enough cash to start buying and flipping properties. When I had enough, I started buying rentals cash, since at the time no back would finance. I read about property management, real-estate contracts and just did it all myself. Only thing I have ever known is just figure it out.

Never understood the whole 'tradie' thing. I have no debt, several million in rental properties and real estate which would more than cover my living expenses if I decided I wanted to stop working today. I still go and unplug toilets myself at my rentals. Even pulled gobs of tampons that plugged the sewer line on one that a tenants daughter thought she could just flush down. I am above no job. I still cut my own lawn, and do my own landscaping at my home. If I can do it, I have no problem doing so. If that makes me a 'tradie' I am kinda proud to be one....

The 3rd SVJ also brought his GT2RS Gray one in the back behind the red and blue GT3 which you can barely see. So you can go tell this whole group how dumb they are.....

In the MAX flex continuance..... (but this is cool too), I thought I'd share a quick little flying vid. This is me 12 years ago. Lots less gray hair and more of it. (as some people in this thread seem fixated on hairlines for some reason). I'm an italian man....so it's pretty much a fixed path regardless

Anway....if I won the lottery, this is the only thing I might do different. I'd go buy another helo. Cant really justify it at this stage I am in of my life. I could swing, it, but playing with cars is MANY times cheaper and more predictable. But, this is where my true passion lies and I hope it does not come off wrong, but flying in and out of your own back yard is a lot of fun

Throw back....I am the guy on the right obviously. Flying my buddy and his kid (who is now in college!)

If you get bored, skip to the 3:00 mark for a strafing run and RTT (return to target) turn. Nose straight up till you stop and kick it around and go right back from where you came. Only think I was missing was the machine gun pod!

Planes and Helos are very different. I had thought of buying an airplane just for travel, but there is not a lot of fun in flying airplanes. They are quite practical though. But I dont have a need for one, and my wife would not be big on using it.

Helos are just different and they do things only helos can do. I hold both a commercial and instructor rating, but I dont want to 'work' it. In the end, the ship I would want would cost close to 750-900, and fixed costs, hangarage, insurance, and annual inspections would set me back about 35k annually and that is before you even fly. The cost per hour including maint reserve and direct costs are about 400/ hour, so if I flew 100 hours a year that would be 40k more. Helos are not cheap.

No worries. It is good to not have everything you could want. When my kids get through school, I can make that decision if I want to go back to owning one. I am not sweating it....

Please explain this further, I'm a poverton, and I can't see myself putting down $200k on what amounts to exactly as you stated, a toy. I'd lease it for a year, get bored, and get something else, rinse and repeat.

And seriously, how much do you guys make, and what do you do. Between my wife and I we're at almost $300k/y, and I drive a Kia.

After I got my act together, got it paid off, I made a commitment to NEVER buy anything until I could pay for it. I get that this is unrealistic for most. I have never had a loan since. Never had a morgatage, never had a car payment.

It was not always easy, and for many years I lived pretty modestly. My first apartment, I could not afford furniture. I helped a person clean out a storage unit, and asked if I could have a school chair with the built in arm. That was my breakfast table in my apartment. 100% serious on my life. My first year in the 95 degree south, I never turned on the AC in the apartment because I had to save money.

So hard to remember that hungry kid now. I could not imagine being like that. But I came from nothing and I did not spend any money unless I had to. That is what started me on the path of paying for things as I went.

As my business grew, I was able to pay for my first home as I built it. I have done that with every home since. Never had a mortgage.


I have other friends who are self made. We look at things differently. We see the other people and we say they are in the 'Matrix'. They dont see their own prisons the create for themselves in the systems that the main stream work force put in place to make them think they are getting ahead, but really they are enslaved.

That is going off the deep end a little, but I get a lot of people wont understand.

If I were in your shoes, I would look to do real estate investment. Keep your credit up good. Your income is great. Being self employed, it is very hard to get financing. With a w2 like that, you can be good if you manage it. There are different paths to take. In the end, real estate is a great one for about everyone, and there are different approaches.

I would never spend so much on a car. I'm already trying the real estate thing, just bought my second home. At the end of the day, all I want is to be able to enjoy my time with my family. I'm glad that you've been able to achieve most things that you've wanted in life. We're all gonna make it.

Example I’m a prime customer with extremely strong DTI (debt to income ratio is the key ratio for auto lending) I can get a near 0% interest rate think 1.9% APR

I take my quarter mil and invest it in literally anything and make 12%.. over the course of 5 years your 10% interest arbitrage nets you $152,627. Before some smart ass says 12% is hard to get even my chitty 401k index funds have made that historically

I will say there is peace of mind in owning outright however and with exotics maintenance is another factor to consider. Owning the car outright makes the $5-10k engine-out service hurt a little less

I dont know what happened to my fascination with supercars. I am a HUGE car guy, still watch almost every single car review that hits the market, still go to car meets but my desire and fascination with supercars is completely gone. I could have a billion dollars in the bank and wouldnt buy one...

I think it has something to do with the fact that reasonable cars (around a 100k) are so ludicrously good and have so much HP that average person cant come close to their limits on a track without years of training and experience. Why would I spend 300k - 500k on a "supercar" when a c8 is ludicrous for most people. Heck most people cant push a Miata around the track let alone a C8.

...anyone else in this same boat..I kind of missing having a Ferrari or Lambo stop me in my tracks. Feel like I lost a piece of my childhood.

it might be partly that

but I also think its that when i was growing up, i think ONE parent at my school had a 'rari. It was a thing. Now, in my perfectly average apartment garage, every other car is a Maserati, an M5, or a Porsche. Every 'exotic' is made in far bigger numbers than a decade or two ago. Hardly anything turns my head now

Pretty clear by the replies ITT who is content with their lives and achievements and/or focused on improvement vs those that are miserable and desire only to drag others down to their level rather than bring themselves up.

That meet up is wild OP, and I would be a liar if I said I wasn't a little jelly of your toys/home/lifestyle, but I'm also mirin the strong family unit you and your wife have built. GJDM, you have truly made it.

Used to be exactly the same way.  I could have gave 2-sh!ts about fast cars...etc.   I liked them in my 20's but kinda was 'over it'.    My son since he was born was facinated with cars.  It was not me pushing it on him.  As he grew up, he started to know every name...etc.   It is through his fascination that my excitement was renewed.   Really a fun and rewarding thing.   He is the last of my kids and he and I are on this journey together.

Again...my 'stuff means nothing' comment.    I find what I enjoy most out of the car thing, is everything else it brings to my life.   We do charity events for kids.   Recently did an event at our big childrens cancer hospital.  My son was with me.   And to see these kids who are wheelchair bound, and covered in blankets in the middle of summer, smile and give a thumbs up and ask us to start the cars and rev them up.  Hard to explain.  It is heat breaking to see  but those kids are not sad.  They are smiling.  What a punch in the head at the bravery and wisdom that comes from these warriors.  I am humbled to be able to do that and share those moments with my son.
