A Man Called Ove - Fredrik Backman – 8.5/10

Ove is an old man who is set in his ways and doesn't care to be "in touch" with how people are today. He does things his way and his way only. Ove doesn't really like anyone because he thinks everyone is an idiot. He has lost his wife and is completely alone, yet people never seem to leave him alone. Even though this was a little slow at times, there were some really good feel good moments in this story. Fredrik Backman just has a way of drawing you in, and you just want to keep on reading to see how everything progresses.

NB I did read around 80% of Lovecraft's 'Haunter of the Dark' whilst on holiday, but did not get to finish in time as the book belonged to the property library. I liked 'The Dunwich horror' especially

I never read the book, but saw the movie; it was really good. I am a huge fan of Beartown, though. I heard that the sequel is solid, as well.

Killers of the Flower Moon - David Grann – 10/10

It's about time I finally read some nonfiction instead and wow this really hit the mark! Set in the 1920s (mostly) in North Eastern Oklahoma where rich native Americans are living in the wealthiest county in the US, but also the highest homicide per capita in the US as well. It seems like some people aren't too keen on native Americans having so much money given to them because of the enormous plot of oil lying underneath their reservation. You don't need Biggie Smalls 70 years later to tell you that with mo' money comes mo' problems.

Mass corruption, injustice, and greed follows the oil rich Osage tribe and native Americans are being murdered in record numbers. Something has to be done and the newly appointed FBI (ran by J Edgar Hoover) is sent to investigate using early crude forensics to solve what's going on. Many black and white photos are included in the text and it really adds another dimension to the story. I would say that this is the best story untold that I have ever read, but that won't be for long.

A movie directed by Martin Scorsese starring Leonardo Dicaprio, Robert Di Nero, Brendan Frasier, and others is set for early 2022.

The Nightingale - Kristin Hannah – 8/10

So this has been on the top of my Goodreads list as the highest rated book (4.57/5), of about 300 books, for about a year now. I was pretty excited to read this, especially since I read "The Great Alone" by Kristin Hannah earlier this year and liked it. Somehow, this didn't quite live up to the expectations that I had for this. Still a great book, but not a 10/10 IMO.

Anyways, this story takes place in a small village in France right before the Nazis take over and make life excruciatingly difficult. The main protagonists, two sisters Vianne and Isabel, have very different outlooks on the war. Vianne, the elder, is a mother, and much less impulsive and defiant than her younger sister Isabel. Isabel, is a young eighteen year old, who is very rebellious, fearless, and brave. She doesn't back down from the Nazis even when faced with dire consequences for her actions in speaking outwardly. Isabel is willing to risk her life to fight for France and what she believes in. She joins the French Resistance and adopt the code name "The Nightingale" and help others escape Nazi persecution by helping them cross over to Spain.

I did enjoy this book but it didn't really do anything too unique that I haven't read before. It does, however, pull on your heart strings a bit. It's interesting to hear about WW2 from the perspective of a country that has been invaded and occupied by German soldiers.

The best combination of comradery, never tired of his story, because of that.

It's been a while since I wrote about a book on here. One of the books I've read since then was The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn. It's a good quick Rear Window style voyeur thriller about a traumatized agoraphobic woman who lives a pill-heavy and booze-heavy life in her Brooklyn brownstone when she sees a murder occur across the street but no one believes her about it. It was a very solid read!

Certain terms were broken down easier than in the first which made much more sense, and between the two one seems to be moreso towards beginners and should be a solid cop for those interested in auto repair and maintenance.
