There's 2 sides to this argument, and they're both fair.

I don't know how I would have handled it when I first got married. I don't think I could be driving around in her car though as I like to make my own way.
So smart - honey catches more bees. She's naturally always in a sweet disposition so I'm sure that's a good opener that doesn't seem forced.

As far as the car thing.. her dude doesn't care at this point. She basically forced it on him to just use hers.

Agree, it depends on what side of the fence you're on. One of our assistants bagged a rich guy and my partner had her lawyer go through the proposed prenup and amend items that were crazy unfavorable to her assistant (but if roles were reversed I doubt she'd have complained about said items). Come to think about it, My wife is at about the same income discrepancy - but no prenup crew (wouldn't have counted anyway because she was with me before I made these duckets - I had only debt pre-marriage)
That's nice of her to do that for your assistant. Women supporting women type of behavior. Love seeing that.

You're right. I don't think it's much more complex than what you have going on. She did mention giving him one of her places if things didn't work out. I don't know what she's actually putting in writing though.

In the scenario with my cousin - he had it in writing to give her x house, x y z $ for ever x years they were together. She wasn't going for it. Even though she was coming into this marriage to him with a child that wasn't his (he had none at the time) and zero to her name all while holding a receptionist job. I can tell you his parents were riled tf up when she wouldn't sign it and he called it quits 1 day before the wedding. It was the first time I'd ever flown in to go to a wedding to eat food and drink.. but no wedding took place. He had everything paid for so they just told everyone to come use what he paid for. Was super awkward.

Do you have friends irl? You've literally never mentioned something to one of your close buddy to voice a concern before bringing it up with the person you're dating? Or maybe you never have. Kudos to you. Chicks do this all the time.

Yes random people on the internet discussing it. I didn't tell her I made a huge thread about her.. should I link both of them? Get your panties out of a bunch it's a random thread that I'm actually finding helpful.

As much as a prenuptial agreement of finances makes sense in capitalist America, it really doesnt make sense in believing in the actual virtue of marriage.

I grew up with a divorced mother who got remarried 3 times before I turned 18.
I grew up with a father and step mother who were happily unquestionably married for the whole time and still are.

I learned first hand you pick someone youre ready to spend your whole life, absolutely every single day until death, or dont fukking do it.

Anyway I believe in honoring a marriage, not for moralistic purposes alone but because I think it pays off ultimately getting through huge issues and spending multiple seasons of life with a good person for you. I think people now have not only picked people knowing divorce is a not extremely difficult option, and leave marriages over issues that could have been resolved if people were actually devoted to the marriage concept, and they could have ended up very happy and have a stronger bond. But weak people submit to what society tells them is "unacceptable" and think "okay the whole thing is complete **** now, throw it away".

Going into what people should morally believe is a commitment for LIFE but having a contingency plan already lined up is hypocritical at its essence. Your're not really committed if you're doing that. I would rather get married and have FULL commitment, FULL trust, this person has my back if I kill someone or if I get cancer and lose half my body. If you dont have that then dont get fukking married.

The sex, the conversations, the time you spend together, the longevity of admiring and loving your partner is all enhanced when you fully commit and fully trust someone. The more you keep these little contingencies the more it weakens the actual benefits you get from the relationship, especially after marriage. I didnt realize this until I got engaged but the more you give and let go to the relationship the more you get.
I really love your idea of love above but sometimes I'm a pessimist and believe in insurance. People change whether you want them to or not. Nothing's a sure thing even if you go all in and believe the person you're in it is all in.

I do like what the other poster said about a prenup boiling down to 'my spouse gets everything as long as we remain spouses - and I don't want my x getting everything when they become an x'

lulzz that pic --- GOTTEM.

She isn't worried about this conversation ruining things, it wasn't her idea to get married to begin with. She's very non traditional and has never cared for marriage to begin with. Hell when she told me about her bach party I was really surprised she was even having one. It's our other friends that are dragging her out to have one. AND GUESS WHAT -- we have 7AM HIKES scheduled at this 'PARTY weekend'.. I've never gone to a bach party with this type of itinerary before. Feels like I'm training for some triathlon.

He.... SURPRISE! proposed to her out of the blue and she agreed. She's concerned about the mfer's feelings.

There's 2 sides to this argument, and they're both fair.
On the flip side to that, the adage, "always have an exit strategy" exists for a reason.

It's amazing how you don't think there's anything off with her not being open to discussing this with him.

If my friend came to me with this, I'd advise (there's the advice) him to discuss it with her asap.

I wanted to give everyone closure and provide an update.. They're not getting married anymore. Syke.. that's probably what misc was hoping for.

She told me that she mentioned to him over the phone that they needed to discuss the boring legal details before the wedding when she gets home and he said he was all for it very nonchalantly.

THEN that evening - THIS MFER brings out a doc he got drawn up from a lawyer that's notarized stating that he doesn't want any of her chit if this goes south. She said a weight was completely lifted but they're going to go sit down with hers so that he doesn't leave 'empty handed'. (were the words that she used)

I was / am impressed how this worked out.

Prenups are good for everyone. Regardless of who makes more money, they should be protected from getting fukked over if things fall apart. Too many times I've seen stories of "She cheated on me then took half my sh!t, it's horrible!" I don't see many the other way, "He cheated on me then took half my stuff!" but it'd be just as pathetic.

Respect. That's one way to tell your partner that you are in it because you want to be and not because they have money.
You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.

Oh absolutely. It was really refreshing and I'm so happy there wasn't any needless drama.

Everyone's input in here on how they feel about prenups were quite entertaining. Thanks misc.

Legally, what he said is what would happen without a prenup.

She comes into the marriage with assets. The assets (or their value at the time of marriage) would remain with her at the time of divorce.

Same for him.

Then a 50/50 split of any increase in joint net worth that occurred during the marriage. If they get married and bought a house for 500k, and in 10 years it is worth 900k, and they divorce, each is entitled to 200k of the gain in value. Wouldn't matter whose income bought the house.

A little off topic but I think there needs to be a change in marriage laws

When you get married you literally swear an oath to god "til death do us part"

and yet divorce rates in the USA are over 60%..

It should be viewed as a life contract in which serious jail time is given for breaking said contract (obvious exceptions made for extreme and rare cases of brutality, illegal activity, mutual decision to separate etc.)

If people truly seen it as a life contract (and it was enforced by the law) then all the prenup BS wouldn't be necessary

At the end of the day in a marriage you are supposed to give your entire self (and everything you own) to your partner to build a family together

If there's any doubts then you shouldn't get married in the first place
