Professor Suspended for Rebuffing Request to Give Black Students Easier Final Exam

The incident that spurred the lawsuit began on the morning of June 2, 2020, when he received an email from who he said was a non-Black student asking that Klein grade Black students with greater “leniency” in the wake of Floyd’s death and the civil unrest that followed.

“We are writing to express our tremendous concern about the impact that this final exam and project will have on the mental and physical health of our Black classmates,” the student wrote.




In response, Klein emailed the student, and asked: “Are there any students that may be of mixed parentage, such as half black half-Asian? What do you suggest I do with respect to them? A full concession or just half? Also, do you have any idea if any students are from Minneapolis? I assume that they are probably especially devastated as well. I am thinking that a white student from there might possibly be even more devastated by this, especially because some might think that they’re racist even if they are not.”

What about upholding the school's academic integrity? UCLA is a top school with academic reputation scores on par with Harvard.

Standardized tests were first implemented to eliminate favoritism (racism) so that everyone would be subject to the same fair standard... and now standardized tests are being eliminated because supposedly it puts Black students at a disadvantage...

But seriously, I've never heard of standardized exams being made "easier" for specific groups of students according to their ethnicity or whatever. Sure, you may get like individual extensions etc according to circumstances etc, but wtf are you on about?

EDIT: According to the article, a NON-black student asked the Prof to grade black students differently.

Myself and a few others have taken the liberty of bringing attention to the racial tensions that we face today. I will be honest about my intentions. I would like my children and their children to live in a world where they have no trouble finding people who look like them to settle down with and start a family.
