Maybe this is an elementary question so neg away if I'm just retarded..

But I have seen first hand constricting the airway of someone until they lose consciousness dozens or hundreds of times

In movies however, ppl seem to die instantly after losing consciousness and while i understand that is Hollywood, how long exactly does one have to keep the pressure on to actually take their life?

I would think irl you would need to keep strangling for several minutes after the victim has "went to sleep" am I right?
