You could argue bow hunting is high test but if you're sitting here telling me that shooting a majestic and healthy bear with a rifle makes you alpha then you're an insecure *******. Eating meat does not disqualify you from judging these hunters for partaking in this. RIP bear

Took a lot of hits and a long time to kill the bear. Didn't like that. But I've seen bears kill other animals, at leas online so not too sympathetic. Kill or be killed I guess. People hate hunting but eat meat.

I get the hate for hunters, by some of you. There are a lot of hunters I don't like and wouldn't care to be around. But, overall, hunting actually has a really positive impact on animal populations. Hunters are about the only group that are will to put their money where the mouth is in terms of conservation and habitat preservation. Hunting isn't a threat to big game populations, the big issue is habitat loss - at least in the US.

Its a waste of effort, but I have a few minutes of free time so I'll give it a go.
Trophy hunting and sport hunting are poor terms that mean nothing. If i shoot a white tailed deer for the meat and honor and remember the animal by mounting its head on my wall, is it a trophy? Yes, that's my trophy from the hunt, but no one calls white tail deer hunting trophy hunting. They want trophy hunting to be about rare exotic species. They mean the living animal is the trophy. But where do you draw the line, is a 200 inch whitetail a trophy, but a 180 isnt? What about a 12 years olds first 1 and 1/2 year old buck? Who's standards are we playing by? Virtually all western society hunting is sport hunting in the sense that its a recreational activity and your life does not depend on that animal coming home with you. Virtually every single hunter in the USA can miss his shot then afford lunch later that day. So all hunting is sport hunting, but not all hunting is "bad", see the problem with both these terms?
How did he kill that bear?
He applied for a tag that most likely took upwards of a decade to get pulled (donating money every year he applied). Then he paid the state for a license. The state requires a professional guide for that hunt, so he employed a guide service. All of his equipment (tent, ammo, gun, hat, boots) were taxed and had a portion of that tax go specifically to wildlife conservation (pitman roberts). So before he even saw that bear he paid thousands and thousands of dollars to the Alaska state gov, a local employer and national wildlife conservation funds. All of these organizations then take that money and use it for state biologist, habitat improvement, legal fees to stop land grabs and purchasing of new land to be conserved into habitat. So again, before he shot ONE bear, he has contributed to the greater good of ALL bears and maintained employment for the dozens of people that ensure that bear existed.
Please remove knee jerk emotion and consider the nuance of complex systems. Just google what is required to hunt deer in your state. You'll be pleasantly surprised to see pages and pages of restrictions of dates, size, sex, weapon usage, caliber bullet, harvest size, butchering practices, ect, ect.

Makes me feel sad af. I can understand hunting for food but stuff like this just seems like tiny dink syndrome.

It's terrific, right? So you know, I am in heaven."

And all the "trophy hunting" in Africa - the locals get the meat and you are not allowed to bring it back home to the States

The reason the bear would tear up a human is either it is feeling threatened, territorial, or its bulking season. That doesn't equate to killing wild animals for "sport" lmao.

LOL at acting like viscous animals are just chill, lumbering gentle giants. They'll defend their cubs from people who unluckily ran into them, even though they weren't attacking them.

Trophy hunting is small dick behavior. Hunting is alpha male but killing for sport is weak.
For every man, there is a sentence, a string of words, that has the power to destroy him

A couple points:
1. Strict trophy hunting doesn't really exist anymore.
I am unaware of anywhere it is legal to kill something and allow the meat to spoil.
Doing so is called poaching and is never ok.
2. The biggest killer of bear cubs is other male bears. If the cubs are killed the female can be mated with again, and large boars actively hunt cubs. Control of the biggest and most dominant bears (trophy?) Is encouraged with most wildlife management models, because one male will impregnate many females. You will have more bears if you kill some dominant adult males.
3. Nothing dies peacefully of old age in the wild. Death in its many forms is generally a long drawn out, painful procedure. A bullet or arrow is a pretty humane way of harvesting an animal, given its ultimate method of death in the wild.
4. The guy likely paid a pretty penny for that hunt. Money that went to conservation and habitat preservation. Hunters are the number 1 contributors to wildlife conservation in North America.
5. Eating thenmeat aside, are you a "trophy" hunter if you decide to shoot a deer with the biggest antlers, or the biggest bear? Most hunters who target trophy animals (and still eat the meat), do so because they are skilled hunters. Luck plays a big part, but far be it from a dick measuring contest, it's often a personal challenge, and a good way to challenge yourself when you are really good at something. I don't think it is a crime to try and excel at it, given you will eat the meat anyway.
6. It has been said that trophy hunting saved wild game in north America. Valuing an animal for more than its meat placed a higher value on that animal that just its meat. Value means management and preservation. The Boone and crocket club was created for this reason. If everyone is hunting the big animals because it has a bigger rack, fewer people are killing the females, and the population increases. With whitetail there are more in north America than has ever been in history. So far, passing on the small bucks and does is working to increase herd numbers.
I butcher everything I kill myself, and did shot and processed a black bear about a month ago. Have a deer hanging right now from two nights ago. I am primarily a meat hunter.
Hunt your own hunt. I will never degrade another hunter for a decision he makes or an animal he takes if it is legal.
Cheers

-wild game has a much larger variety of food sources. don't expect a salmon fed bear to taste like a bear that got fat on blueberries
-meat care really makes a difference, how quick you got the meat cooled, whether you were able to age it, etc.

While I see the appeal to shoot a bear its just not for me. I hunt big game for meat first and horns second. While I would love a bear rug, I'm too cheap to get it tanned. I'm not eating bear meat either with trichinosis. Its not worth the risk. There is a reason in Idaho you can leave the meat to rot. You have to take the skull and hide though. Just seems like a waste for me personally. Some day I would like to shoot one though. And a mtn lion. And as many wolves as I can. The wolves can rot.

Trichnosis is also found in black bear meat, and it is a staple for lots of people here. All meat is cooked well done as a precaution. Freezing actually kills it pretty well too.
