You classify severity by death rate?

Are you referring to something in the article you think is wrong?

Severity of illness (SOI) is defined as the extent of organ system derangement or physiologic decompensation for a patient. It denotes a medical classification as either minor, moderate, major, or extreme. The SOI classification is meant to provide a basis for evaluating hospital resource use or to establish patient care guidelines.

****ing doomers are perpetuating this authoritarian garbage. This virus is endemic. Viruses mutate as a function of natural selection due to pressure (i.e., vaccines). You have probably had the virus already. The disease caused by the virus is extremely treatable. There's no jabbing this **** away, get used to it and lose some weight ffs, your fear is pathetic.

Claims made by the paper

- omicron is much more likely to infect a person who has had Covid before

- it is no less severe

Meanwhile in reality.

https://news.yahoo.com/omicron-hospi...142229746.html

Hospitalization rates from South Africa's Omicron surge are around 1.7%, its health minister said.

That is less than a tenth of the 19% rate seen at a comparable point when Delta was surging.

This is likely due to a high rate of immunity in the population, the health minister said.

If you aren’t ready to admit both claims made by the paper are wrong then I’ll just let you pick whichever one you feel more comfortable with.

Lots of people are in this position. I had a confirmed case of COVID (along with about 10 other people, all of whom were vaccinated by the way) - literally would not have known if everyone else wasn't popping positive. Ate some vitamin D, vitamin C, quercetin, and zinc, and didn't miss a single workout. I actually hit a PR on my vertical while positive with COVID and went on a hunting trip with another guy who popped positive. Mid 30s. Unless you have one or more nasty comorbidities, or are elderly, it's really not that dangerous especially if you stay active.

Hopefully we do "lock down" again though...it'll push the rest of the normies over the edge. People are absolutely ****ing sick of this authoritarian nonsense. The idea that we would sacrifice the lives, livelihoods, and lifetimes of the healthy, in order to protect the old and infirm, is an absolutely grotesque precedent to set.

People seem to be talking past each other ITT.

Are Omicron infections less severe than those of previous variants? Probably.

Does this mean Omicron is inherently less virulent than previous variants? No.

Inherent (genetic) virulence =\= infection (realized) virulence. The greater ability to reinfect hosts with previous immunity is going to lead to, on average, less severe infections. To compare which variants are genetically more or less virulent, you’d want to limit the analysis to immunologically naive hosts. At current there is no compelling evidence to suggest Omicron is genetically less harmful when controlling for pre existing immunity. Let’s hope that it is for the minority of people who have not been infected or vaccinated.

From the paper, on which I am not an author, but I can understand why you would direct your anger towards me as I'm more accessible than the authors or policy makers:
"We find strong evidence of immune evasion, both from natural infection, where the risk of reinfection is 5.41 (95% CI: 4.87-6.00) fold higher for Omicron than for Delta, and from vaccine-induced protection. "

"Our estimate of the hazard ratio for reinfection relative to Delta also supports previous analysis of reinfection risk in South Africa . Prior to Omicron, the SIREN cohort study of UK healthcare workers estimated that SARS-CoV-2 infection gave 85% protection against reinfection over 6 months (16), or a relative risk of infection of 0.15 compared with those with no prior infection. Our hazard ratio estimate would suggest the relative risk of reinfection has risen to 0.81 [95%CI: 0.73-1.00] (i.e. remaining protection of 19% [95%CI: 0-27%]) against Omicron."

"...data on hospitalisations are still very limited."

"There are several limitations of this analysis. While case numbers are increasing quickly, there are still limits in our ability to examine interactions between the variables considered."
From the yahoo new article:
"This dynamic may not persist in other nations, as South Africa has a much younger population than places like the US and Europe, Bloomberg noted.

There is also a high rate of immunity in that population from vaccination and previous exposure to COVID-19. A recent survey found that 70% to 80% of the population had antibodies against the coronavirus, per Bloomberg."

"Phaahla warned that the low hospitalization rates don't necessarily mean that the virus itself is less dangerous, South Africa's News 24 reported.

It could instead reflect the fact that many people already have some level of immunity after almost two years of the pandemic.

Phaahla encouraged people to socialize over the winter period but follow COVID-19 protocols to limit the strain on the health system.

"Our healthcare workers are physically and emotionally exhausted, so we really plead to all of [you] to think of them as we celebrate this festive season," he said."
I take the point of the original article to be that the "new variant" escapes both "natural" and vaccine-induced immunity.

I don't know why that makes everyone so angry, but my CP suggests it does.

Edit to clarify:

We often see genotyping data that provides a breakdown of cases by variant.

For example, where I am:

Omicron has an R(t) of 3.16, whereas Delta is 0.72

We're seeing ~90% of new cases as omicron, and ~10% delta.

Likely due to immune escape (topic of the thread).

Nature doing what it does best - who’s surprised?

Humans think they’re above it the way we emotionally react to a non-emotional agent interested solely in its own self-preservation.
