I lifted heavy for half my life and now suddenly I got this elbow tendonitis that is debilitating.

I took months off doing rehab and it is slowly getting better.

Good news is the gains don't really disappear past an initial 10% loss.

I am shifting my lifting strat for preservation over big numbers.

No-handed squats were something I adopted when I stopped training for strength and chasing pr's. They allowed me the challenge myself with MUCH less weight. The concentration required meant there was no cheating on form or grunting through reps. You have to maintain perfect balance. Anyone who has been in this game long enough, knows that motivation has to come from within. I have over 20 years of training under my belt and the last 11 with no lay-offs. Keeping yourself challenged is important. No-handed did that for me.

It also let me load my back up without doing heavy deads. (mind you at the time I was training heavy, I could rep 585 for 7-8 dead stop reps. And doing RDL w/ 495x10-12 was a non-issue. So anything that would lighten my load was good.

Since then they have remained a staple for me since I have been unable to train heavy in the past 3 years. I know some might not understand, but 315 is not a 'heavy' squat for me. My strength is all still there, it is just my stability of my lower back is not. I dont think I would have a problem dropping 495 for a few reps if my back would not go into spasm. So 315 actually feels 'light' to me load wise.

I have been working up though and mostly stayed around 225. Found this from almost exactly a year ago.

Up till last night I done what I had felt was enough conditioning that I thought my back would not give me any issues. I was wrong. Not sure if there is an answer for me and I may just have to stay lighter from here on out.

But I am not quitting that is for sure. If my body allows, I will continue to push myself conservatively and safely. You dont get to where I am by giving up. But I recognize that certain things are out of my control.

Thanks man!

I know you probably don't see it that way but at a certain point you gotta learn to 'check your ego at the door' if you don't want to completely destroy your body.

Also 315lbs may be 'light' to you but tell that to your spine when it's placed directly on top of it.

50 is still young enough to do just about anything but at the same time you have to be smart and understand you ain't 25 anymore either.

The video was pretty brutal. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Thanks man. Yep, I did not want to watch it, but it was good for me. I also realized that is the first time ever in my life I have ditched a squat. Yes, I have never failed at a squat. I have always been careful about how I train and I use very strict form and very controlled movements.

Example from just a few years ago prior to my injury. The vid below is a 535 squat at about 205lbs bw. Not great but not bad. I have not been able to squat much since my OTHER accident in 09. Aircraft crash and left with nerve damage on my left leg, besides broken neck and frontal brain injury. From that time on I have to squat very close stance as my hips dont work if I try to squat wide.

But sadly my Dr told me that I did so much soft tissue damage, that I might never recover. I have managed to maintain my physique with no real issues, I just cant train heavy back supported exercises.

I am not one to give up. I will heal, and keep working. Light of course and slowly. Life is what you make it. I have LONG given up chasing numbers. But it is still important to have some goals.

My goals have been lately to 'have my cake and eat it too'. I have this past year experimented with some radical, for me, fasting protocols. Leaning out more and more. And staying fit and mobile.

2022 will be much the same. Look to approach the 50 milestone in the best shape I have ever been. I know I wont be the strongest, but I am cool with that. But you have to push in some ways. I just have to evaluate cost / value of those with my goals in mind.

Took today off the gym. Going to go in tomorrow and start 2022 off right. Mobility and stretching. Maybe a little bro workout. This is really a very small thing. Just sharing the good and bad.

As you get older, focus should be on not getting injured - find motivation in something other than high numbers and (relatively) dangerous exercises. Hope I’m wise enough to adapt that mentality myself, as I get older.

‘Play stupid games, win stupid prizes’ as the Misc says.

Hope your recovery goes smoothly OP. It’s very impressive to be doing those lifts at almost 50.

Very true man. I fully understand that, but it is hard to change the person you are. I did give up powerlifting about 5 years ago for those exact reasons. Tired of always battling overuse, etc. Guess this is next step for my body. Adapt or die, or quit. The last part is not an option.

I always try to look for the positive, but the biggest downside, is I really dont enjoy training all that much now. I had always enjoyed the fight. It was never about how I looked that my motivation came from. But just trying to find ways to make my workouts enjoyable is my challenge these days. That is kind of where the no handed squats came from. Used to do lunges that way also. But that is a little hard on my knees.

Appreciate the support and kind words. As you get older, you get a little more reflective. I like where I am, but like anyone who has been doing this as long as I am, you are never satisfied. Becoming satisfied takes away the motivation. There must always be a goal, a bench mark. The struggle becomes what to set them as after the thought of new PR's is in the rearview.

This is a small bump in the road. I am guessing I will be squatting very light next week. Been doing some good rehab. Just a muscle spasm. But an indication of an underlying weak point. Which is why I set the weight down rather than forcing the rep. Live to fight another day!

oh man

the way you get back up, I know the feel...that terrible feel that something is not right

props on you for trying OP, but if you're really 50, the risk/reward ratio of pulling that kind of lift ain't worth it my dude.
You're way above average for your age, you should sit comfortably on that mountain and stop ****ing up with your spine

Not sure how old you are, but I never had a significant injury in the gym. I trained heavy all my life and up until I injured my back in a car accident 3 years ago.

I dont think it is true to say 'freeweight' is dangerous. I think the opposite is ture. Free weights build all your supporting muscles and allow your body to follow it's natural path. As long as you use good form.

If I had not been injured outside the gym, I would still be training without injury.

Just a thought, but from my perspective, free weight training is king. Physiques that concentrate on moving heavy weight over the long haul just look different. I also believe for natural training, it should always be the foundation of your training.

Sorry to hear about your injury, hopefully you heal up quick. It would kill me not to be able to squat, it's my favorite lift.

You should pick up a reverse hyper machine, I hear they're good for strengthening the back after an injury.

Also, on the front squat, if you can't get into the front rack position because you can't grip the bar, you can use straps or two short lengths of rope. Wrap it around the bar where you would have your hands and grab the end of the straps and hold them up.

Funny that you mention that. I was deadlifting heavy last week and I had a big meal before hand, which I normally never do, and I almost tweaked my back just taking off my stupid belt after the set. Didn't have a problem this week and I only had a light pre-workout meal.

Funny you say that. I have one. Right next to leg press. Bought it when I first got hurt, but have not used it in a couple years. I need to. Just have been feeling ok, but obviously there are underlying issues. I know the reverse hyper is supposed to do wonders.

50% better today. Little bit of pain, but not bad. Not limping around. Spent a good bit of time stretching a few times. Worked most of day in garage getting ready to drop the trans out of one of my cars. Feeling OK. Minor set back.

I kno this got said like 5 times already but seriously the no hand thing seems like it puts extra pressure on the back. If you still want to squat but got fuked shoulder mobility why not buy something like this

Also low bar squats are way easier on the back too

Was in gym today. No big deal, just another day and a small bump in the many year journey. Lots of stretching last few days. Back is 95% better. Not quite ready for a major load, but will probably do some light deads tomorrow.

This is just life. When you have been at it this long, it is just life. Reassessing my 2022 goals.

Thanks for all the support. To all those that knock the no-handed squats. You ought to try them. For those that say they put undue stress on the back, you are showing how little you know about form and mechanics. If the weight transfer is through the heels, the bar path is what the bar path is for your body. I am no more bent over doing these than a traditional squat. I would say I am a touch more upright. BUT, I have to be way tighter doing no-handed to maintain control. There is no getting sloppy.

Anyway...Hope all your 2022 workouts started well. I had a great one tonight!

First swelfie of 2022!
