5k?

I'd look for something with the lowest mileage than a certain type of car at that price point.

Any of the traditional reliable cars like Honda or Toyota would be great, but at that price point I'd focus on something with low mileage. A Honda with 200k aint gonna be better than a Subaru with 100k IMO and reliable brands retain their value better. Just look for something wiht the lowest mileage if you want to avoid repair costs.

I dunno what 5K would even get ya TBH. Car prices like many things have really inflated. You used to be able to get a decent used car for under 10k not all that long ago but I have been casually looking for an extra car for my house with a 15k budget and there is nothing.

5k can still get you something decent. FB marketplace is a good place to shop. Almost anything Japanese will be a good bet. I'd even think you could get a 2WD truck depending on where you get it. Usually those have far less value than a 4WD.

Not if I buy them first, lol. I had a buddy and his Dad that were into the Mazda pickups of the early 90's. They had home Depot racks of parts and sold them throughout New England. I've driven a couple, and they were great little trucks. My favorite was a blue manual 4x4, I wish I bought it from them. I've been trying to find a ZR2 S10, but I think most of them are scrapped or not worth buying by now. I had a 2001 ZR2 ext cab with 172k miles, still ran great until I got t boned by someone. I still miss it.

Edit: bonus points if you can guess how long it'd take op to "save up" 5k to 10k dollars for a car if he's supporting himself. Presumably at a low paying job

You aren't likely to get anything good for under $5K.
