No, thats nothing like that. Whats happening is EXACTLY what MrCarrot said.

US is almost causing the 3WW, making all the NATO countries join it. Plus, US is almost getting Ukraine completely destroyed.

The thing is. Russia will not invade Ukraine because it would mean a war agaisnt NATO. They would get completely annihilated....

I believe Russia was founded in Ukraine and they have a lot of history and resources tied to it. The eastern part that is. They don’t want nato on their doorstep like China didn’t want us on theirs in the Korean War.

Okay wait so Russia wasn't trying to invade Ukraine, they just wanted to keep to themselves and continue the peace. It was Ukraine who struck first and now Russia has been forced to retaliate.

Sorry my bad I didn't know that's what happened. Well then yeah if Ukraine picked the fight they deserve what's coming.

Ukraine did nothing. However they are about to join NATO.

It means NATO countries (especially the US) can keep nuclear power in Ukraine territory (thats whats already happening).

So Russia doesn't feel "safe enough" with NATO nuclear power weapons so close to their border (because it can reach Moscow in minutes), but the US is not removing/moving it back ... thats the problem. US keeps pushing it closer and closer to the border.

Did Ukraine decide to join NATO before Russia started putting troops on their border or after? I'm just trying to figure out who were the aggressors here.

Russia invaded Ukraine 8 years ago and annexed Crimea (if I'm not wrong). So the relations between them haven't been "healthy" for a little while. The "tension" on their borders is not new.

However, this "episode" started because Ukraine decided to join NATO, so Russia increased the troops/weapons on their border.

Nah.

Ukraine - and Belarus and Kazakhstan - signed an agreement in 1994 and gave up their nukes in exchange from a promise from the Russians that they would respect their territorial sovereignty.

Then NATO and Russia signed a deal in 1997, the gist of it was that Ukraine stays a neutral buffer state and the US would not build up military capabilities in the area, so everyone stays in their own backyard. Over the years many countries surrounding Russia - and formerly under Soviet influence - joined NATO so they became quite boxed in.

Then the 2014 Ukrainian-Russian war started by the Russians obviously threw a wrench in all of this, especially after they annexed Crimea after a "curious" referendum and whatnot.

Thing is, US has been building up said military capabilities in the area, among others they have installed Aegis missile defense systems in Romania and Poland with the original pretense that they would provide defense from a possible missile attack from the SE/Iran. Also rotating in thousands of troops and shipping a boatload of military equipment.

Russia became quite pissed at the whole "defensive missile sites" and whatnot, stating that it's bs and that they could possibly use Tomahawks or whatnots to reach key Russian cities in minutes, including Moscow. Well they're not completely wrong about this.

Thing is, that Russia absolutely needs/wants Ukraine to stay as a neutral buffer state between them and the rest of Europe - not to mention the pipelines, farm areas etc. - and they feel threatened by NATO/US slowly surrounding and encroaching them step by step.

So Ukraine had a very valid reason and concern to join NATO is what my questions have been about. Based of Russia's aggression, and being severely weaker it seems like Ukraine's hand was forced, no?

Annexed Crimea with no magazines in their guns and only after a CIA lead rebellion collapsed Ukraine's govt and a puppet leader was installed.

Okay cool. So when it comes to Ukraine it seems to me that Russia started all this chit as they were the aggressors.

Normandy Format meeting on the 24th. Will be interesting to see what comes from that. Having a meeting without Biden is probably for the best.

The US and NATO basically have to make a decision. Does the US believe Ukranian sovereignty is worth the lives of 100k+ young US soldiers, along with all the economic devastation at home that the war would cause?

To protect the UK, Germany, South Korea, Japan...maybe.

Ukraine? Absolutely fukin not

But then that's the slippery slope. How many lives would Russia invading cost in the long run? Then with their new power who stops them from turning their eye on others?

Not saying i want war but this has to be stopped now rather than later no?
