You are right.. I work in a restaurant. All the portions are being cut and prices raised, Scallops from $35 -> $40 and you only get 4 instead of 5 etc etc......

Jersey Mikes hasn't changed the size of their bread lol

And if anything I think Chipotle stepped up the amount of rice and beans (cheap chit) to replace the weight/size of the good stuff (proteinz)

I always get double meat at Chipotle.. but I only ask for itafterthey put the meat on first. That way they have to match what they've already put on and can't skimp.

Its not the portion sizes as much as it is eating low quality, high fructose syrup food combined with modern day inactivity

I went to a breakfast/lunch/dinner diner place a couple months ago. First time I had been to a sit down restaurant in like 2 years, as I don't enjoy eating out much anymore. But, I had been to the place countless times in my lifetime before that. I noticed their portions were substantially smaller, and it seemed like they didn't really give a crap anymore.

It's noticeable at fast food joints like McDonald's too. I only go to their drive throughs, because F sitting down in a fast food dump to eat these days. Their portions are smaller across the board. Meat patties are like 30% smaller than they were a few years ago, they give you 30 - 40% less fries in any given order, etc. Between that and all the inflation price hikes on everything, I seldom feel like eating out at all.

Chipotle has always been terrible about that. Their whole business model is based on tricking customers into thinking they're getting huge portions by giving them 2 pound rice burritos with a bit of cheap meats, beans, and other stuff tossed in. Then they cover up the blandness of it all by drenching it in cheese/sour cream and sauces. Had a burrito there the other day and was quickly reminded of why I only go there once every few years these days.

So when you buy the same products over and over again you make observations like this.
This began easily at least 6 years ago but has increased during the pandemic in 2020. I first observed it with Breyers going from a half gallon down to a quart for the same price. My gf called me a conspiracy theorist but it just continued with product after product. Toilet paper, orange juice, bakery products, you name it, it all has decreased in ounces (read the boxes) and jumped in price.
Restaurants think you are dumb and won't notice but again if you are used to a box of fried rice having 15 shrimp and it is now mostly rice, you take notice.
There is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and...It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!

I think this stuff has been happening since early in the pandemic, using less ingredients or lower quality ingredients etc to offset higher costs without increasing prices for consumers

Getting harder to find those gems of value, but the mom & pop chinese restaurants are still giving SERIOUS value when it comes to portions. Also a greek place here that is awesome for quantity.

I understand why it is happening [job sucks and not having enough staff/angry customers makes it even worse + higher labor and food costs], but it seems like a downward spiral must occur as restaurant food becomes less worth the hassle and cost.

I hadn't been to Rosa's Tortilla Factory since maybe June- went last week and it was $6 for one soft taco and one bean tostada. Not only was it $2 more there was also less meat, less beans, and less cheese. These aren't large or high cost items and at a fast food place besides. IIRC the price has gone from $2+ in the mid 00s > $3+ > $4+ around 2017? then jumped to $6 in less than a year.

16 oz. bag > 14 oz. bag > 12 oz. bag > saw some bags that were 10.5 ozs. recently.

Real inflation is more like 30-40 percent, not the 7 percent the CPI is telling us
Best lifts:
