One complaint Im hearing that I think is relevant and would annoy me is I've heard people say during puzzle scenes, Aloy tends to talk.... Alot. And goes on to drop hints really early on about what to do. I don't think I want that kind of hand holding through the game and I'm surprised they haven't added an option to remove it.

love the lore in the first one, the "old world" stuff. Just thought the moment to moment and overall modern world story was poor.

I remember something like this from the first game. Like I'll be thinking about a puzzle and her or some moron npc will start talking and distract me.

i don't even remember any real puzzles in the first game. It's why the zelda comparisons fell flat for me.

Might just be the DLC then. I played it recently and it had a couple puzzles where you had NPCs that wouldn't stfu.

So I put in another 3.5 hours today. Basically I decided to not push main line or anything. Game is a big step up in the side quest interactions. I’ll just have to play this and ER together through March.

I also played this second session in favor resolution with low motion blur. I gotta say it’s definitely still playable. Very impressed with how good it feels. I actually put down Ghost of T until the ps5 patch because I found the fps so nauseating coming after primarily PC gaming.

Gotta say I might actually play the rest in resolution mode at 30fps. It’s just not bothering me as much as other console games.

Other than that. Having a blast. Game way improved in dialogue and npc like…acting while they talk. Beautiful game. Gameplay still great and improved upon. Story has enough going for it to keep you interested. Though that still definitely leans into over - exposition same as the first. But I don’t mind.

The first game had some of the absolute best combat - both ranged and melee of the entire PS4 generation. Kinda hard to improve upon.

Notsureifsrs. Melee combat was worthless and now it is a little better but still not worth in most situations besides stealth takedowns and critical strikes

Lmao it's pretty widely agreed on that the combat in the first one was fantastic, but if you say so.

Only talking about melee obv. The bow and tools were excellent and are even better now.

Like why would you ever use melee to take 50 swings to kill something you can shoot a few times ya know

U foking wot m9's?

Aiite lemme be clear on one thing. Horizon is a 3rd person shooter. Just because it uses bows and other ranged weapons due to the setting and lore doesn't change that core mechanic.

I'm sure HFW improved on HZD's melee and made it more viable, but the only time I ever bothered with melee in the original game was when I was surrounded by a mob of weaker machines and needed an "oh fuk get me out of this" attack when my brain had a seizure.

Again, maybe they fixed it in part 2 but I never cared about melee in the original.

I think from the reviews it got it's far from a lock at GOTY, especially considering what is still to come this year but it'll probably be in the conversation. If you missed Sushi I am assuming you missed other PS4 greats as well so surely worth getting a PS5 IMO. You could play just games from the PS+ collection for awhile before you even buy anything.

I use her spear all the time. Melee combat to me is better than just about anything else I've played in the last several years. Nothing immediately jumps to mind as being considerably better for sure...

Dude, I love the game but are you fukin kidding me? I’ve leveled up melee and a spear strike still takes hardly any health from enemies. One shot from a bow is like 4-5 spear hits worth of damage.

Only time I used a spear in HZD was when I needed an OH CHITE they're too close, panic attack!

I don't think it's intending to be like Tsushima's buttery smooth swordplay. It's a shooter.

I never said the bow doesn't do more damage, but it's still plenty viable. There's no way you leveled the staff tree that much if your staff is that trash. It doesn't do the same damage as bows, but you can get 3-4 hits in in the time you can get 2 bow hits in, which is precisely why it's viable. Not to mention the knockdown ability from heavy hits, which is a massive advantage because you then get a free critical hit in while they're down.
Also often times things are shooting at you, charging at you, etc and using the bow just isn't always ideal. Sometimes it really is just easier to go in with the staff.

Lmao @ anyone who claims using her staff isn't viable or good.

Correct, she does monologue a bit more and for some puzzles she does "voice" out what she needs to do ... It can be annoying at times when i'm trying to figure stuff out myself, but a couple times while I was exploring she talked about something that I originally missed while running around lol.

Improved, still not the best since it feels slightly clunky imo especially using that vaulting jump move, but the melee is definitely more improved.

The first games melee combat was bad, but like you said her staff is actually pretty damn good ... you can knock over machines and break off it's armor with power attacks sometimes easier than just using the bow, especially for smaller/medium/slightly larger than medium sized creatures.

Man, those are my 2 favorite ps4 exclusives. I would go with Horizon but there's many things that Tsushima does better which makes it feel more polished. I can easily name about 10 things which Tsushima mogs Horizon in, but it did come out a few years later.

Main reasons I chose Horizon:

- I enjoy fantasy settings. I think it allows much more to be explored and makes the combat more fun when you can battle things other than just humans. Horizon manages to stay grounded in "reality" but at the same time finds a way to give me giant robots to fight. I just feel more excited for that. As such, the combat was far more varied due to so many enemy types.

- Much more lore and the story plays out like a mystery so you're constantly intrigued and yearning to uncover more. Whereas in Tsushima you play out a war story. Both stories are great but I prefer the former a little.

- Tsushima's open world was prettier, but Horizon's had more things going on. More variations, mysterious things in the world make you want to explore and uncover more. Robots and people roaming about. Villages were livelier and it felt like things were happening while npc's were living out their lives. HZD's world could be improved alot but Tsushima's world felt more empty.
