Optimistic maths (that also proves Wikipedia is wrong with the 10% figure). 50%ish of the population is male, that's about 22 million. Now subtract kids and the elderly (though there will be a few teenagers and grandpas with guns) and you lose about another 7 million. Down to roughly 15 million. Then take off the armed forces and reservists who you assume will be armed, there's another million.

So you have 14 million Ukrainian "civilians" who can technically fight. Using the figures above there are about 4.5 million guns, legal and illegal, in civilian hands. Assuming a best case scenario where people with multiple guns hand them out (why wouldn't you, three people with rifles is better than one person trying to use three rifles at the same time) and you have 9.5 million unarmed. There will be cripples, criminals, and mentally deficient people---but a lot of those can fight in a push. I'll not knock them off the total to balance out the fact this is a ridiculously optimistic estimate.

Now you have the weapons sent in, unfortunately when countries are being armed by NATO, it's measured in tonnes not individual weapons. But again, let's be optimistic and say the rifles the US and the like are sending way about 6lbs a piece. That's about 367/tonne.

I can't find exact numbers beyond a second 90 tonne shipment the US made the other day. That included ammunition, but let's offset the fact we don't know what everyone else has sent by saying they have 180 tonnes worth of small arms, which is around 66k guns. The Ukrainian army will have spare weapons laying around too, so let's say they have 450k unused rifles and drop the total number of unarmed men down to 9 million.

Doubling this up as the CLIFFS:

-Absolute best case scenario, there are 9 million unarmed Ukrainian men who could be armed and fighting if the country had gun ownership on par with the US.

-At best, 6 million are armed with weapons of varying quality but the real figure won't be anywhere near that. Which is probably why they're telling them how to make molotovs, like that was a complex and secret bit of information in the first place.

Pretty strict gun ownership rules, you have to be in the army / police or be a journalist, judge etc. The guns that were handed out in Kyiv are provided by the government, they are not black market afaik.

Is there an understanding that people from different parts of Ukraine with different histories are different from each other or is someone from Kharkiv (has a largely Russian history) considered the same as someone from L'viv (was never part of Russia)?

My impression is that this was the sentiment in the past although it might be lessening with people moving around and beginning to speak the same language and the east identifying less with Russia.
