The point is that the Bosporus is the only way into or out of the Black Sea and is controlled by Turkey. The Montreux Convention controls who and what can go through the straight, and has some pretty specific language about warships - both of Black Sea states and others. Despite any treaties or conventions, it's currently controlled by a NATO state and that has obvious strategic implications.

So, if you're saying that part of why Putin is going into Ukraine is to secure access to the Black Sea before Ukraine could become NATO, then what I'm saying is that it would be somewhat irrelevant because NATO already effectively controls the Bosporus. Putin would have to also control that if he really was going after total Russian control out of the Black Sea. And I don't see him invading Turkey or starting a war with NATO to do it.

Not much point in securing access to the Black Sea if NATO can just bottle you up in it. So, that might be part of the reason he's doing it, but I still say it's more just a flex on his part to try to look powerful or relevant, or to secure other assets within Ukraine.
