Pretty much anywhere in Europe, South Africa, West Indies, Subcontinent. His name like Lara, Tendulkar, Bradman, Sobers etc transcends the game & pretty much are household names.

One football match is what-a fifth of an ODI match? Possibly less. When soccer players are playing a match for six-seven hours in a day or doing it five days running they are as good athletes. Also not many cricketers dropping dead in their 20's & 30's.

Primarily, then add in the fans from the other test & top associate members-UK, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan. It is quite mind boggling that there are 7.9 billion people on the planet & over a billion of them are watching a Cricket match at the same time. What is the Superbowl record? Something like 114 million it appears-which puts it into context about how popular it is worldwide.

And Kobe didn’t transcend sports IMO. Few athletes achieve that. Maybe Ali, Tyson, Usain Bolt, Cristian Ronaldo.

Kobe was a basketball player, big player, famous, nice guy, but outside of basketball (which is outside of the USA) not many people really cared. They were more sad at the tragedy of the event, has he been a 70yr old nobody would care.

Ali was a hero and truly transcended sports. Tyson was the “baddest man in the planet”, that’s a different sort of aura. Bolt has basically become synonymous with speed, which is bigger than basketball since everyone can relate to speed. And Cristiano has inspired millions all over the world, from the Europe to South America to Asia to Africa. Although he has t “transcended” his sport as much as the other guys.

Kobe was a great ball player. I guess the second best of his generation.
Not a Kobe fan, but he was ridiculously popular overseas when he was playing, esp in Asia and Italy.

I don't follow cricket but to me he just seemed like a guy that lived life to the fullest. I still remember his Ashley and Martin commercials which inspired me to fight the reaper early. Rip Warnie.
