Don’t know about other localities but here in Nor Cal our county uses satellite images to check on additions/modifications to your property. Learned about it when I was trying to pull permit for a small project.

Edit:
Pay $2800 and value is $560k. Thank god for prop 13!

Exactly - According to Zillow my house is worth $1.35Million now - but I bought it for a little over $600k 6-7 years ago....and the "assessed value" is still like $500k or thereabouts.....long story short I pay about $1k/month in Property taxes.

These doo-doo head politicians need to bring back the unlimited SALT deduction - for those who don't know this is where you can deduct all that interest from your mortgage loan and property taxes - a couple years ago California capped it at a maximum of $10k which is BRUTAL.....and I chit you not, the reason to cap it at 10k was because "The wealthy need to pay their fair share". MFERS!!! Every house in the Bay Area or LA county or even San Diego now is over $1Million.......Are they all "wealthy" or are they just buying a super modest house in a screwed up economy (Lets Go Brandon!). All those people pay their "fair share" and then some - meanwhile Juan and Jose work under the table and pay ZERO income taxes, and they always PAY NEAR ZERO sales tax because the Mexican communities do everything underground for cash....which in CA they are perfectly allowed to do, because "diversity is good". Then their fat wife craps out 3 kids while using TAXPAYER FUNDED healthcare and benefits.

If I didn't make so much damn money in this craphole state I would have moved to Florida like every other sane person over the last 2 years.

Totally agree about the salt.

QLD seems like a nice place, how much for a beachfront block of land in a non-crocodile-infested area with all municipal services?

Wasn’t the cap of $10k on SALT passed largely by Trump/Republicans as part of the tax legislation back in 2017? A way to penalize Dems from high tax states but it sounds like the more Progressive members of Dem party kind of like $10k cap on SALT - raises $$$ and pushes their equity message/propaganda.

High tax states have tried to get SALT back to where it was but have not being able to. I think the most recent chatter was capping it at $80k.

Note the income tax deduction, which I don't believe renters get - the landlords do.

Yes, the SALT cap was part of the Trump tax cuts. Recently, Pelosi tried to get it bumped to $80k, but then she got vilified for more "tax cuts for the rich".

You can get homes for around $150K still, but it may not be some place that you want to live.

What that list isn't showing you, is a 225k house in Illinois can have 10k property taxes.

Bloomington only city on that list that I'd consider. Illinois been top 3 exited state for 3 years running.

I don't think even in flyover chitsville, I'd find what my family has grown to require for 150k.
