For two people on a budget, given the calm water, a 12 or 14 foot car topper jon boat and a good set of oars would serve you well.

Canoes are great, and you can travel long distances well, but you will sacrifice fishability.


For your budget, most outboards are out of the question, but A small transom mounted electric trolling motor can be had used for $200.00,and a new deep cycle 31 series deep cycle battery for $200.00.

Bring oars in case it dies, safety gear and a small anchor and you will be set to fish a ton of places. Plus, with foamies or a roof rack you could transport it on a prius.

Import some snakehead. Delicious fish, fight like hell, get huge for freshwater, defend their eggs and fry so carp aren't going to bother them. They eat everything though, voracious predators which is why they are so fun to catch. They'll rip the rod out of your hands and keep fighting you on land or in the boat.

What is your offshore? Years ago our family boat was a 36 cigarette force 10 with supercharged 540s.

The kayak will go places the big boats can't. And get there faster in the bed of a truck. I don't like sitting so low to the water though. Picked up this pontoon from Amazon for this season.

Get a canoe and or row boat to start. Look up ******** market/craigslist. If they hobby sticks with the boy and you find yourself wishing you could get from A to B faster, get a 14/16ft aluminum jon boat with a small motor and trolling motor. Last thing you want is 2 fishing trips a year and $1000 motor rusting away in the yard.

I'm looking for an upgrade too. Was looking for a welded jet boat to surf the rivers with a kicker on the back for trolling. Something around 20'

My search ended when people still wanted 45k for a 20 year old het boat

If you're going to keep fish it's much better for the health of the fishery to keep the smaller ones. The biggest fish are the most successful spawners and produce the most offspring with the best likelyhood of survival and the best genetics for getting to trophy size. Really no reason to keep a big one even for a trophy now as a quality replica will look just as good and last forever.

That's how bass fishermen think. Some even get mad if you keep any bass, but they really flip out if you eat a trophy.

I know it sounds counter intuitive and in the past that's how everybody thought but that's changed over time as we've learned more about sustaining healthy fish populations. A lot of lakes now have slot sizes (by length) for this reason. Fish falling within that slot size either have to be put back or they might be the only ones that can be kept, really depends on different factors. The one thing that's consistent though is that the ones OVER the slot (ie. the big ones) are the ones that are most protected from over harvesting.

You can also think of it like this. The little ones MIGHT get bigger if they overcome the odds but the big ones already beat the odds to get bigger by avoiding natural predation and getting caught by anglers. Also not many fish actually have the genetics to reach trophy size no matter how long they live.

In most lakes I fish there's a lot of bass between 1-2 lbs and they aren't that hard to catch. Why keep a real trophy just to eat it when there's so many smaller ones? A lot of lakes are even over populated and could benefit from taking out some of the smaller ones to reduce competition for food and allow for fish to get bigger.

good advice actually, I use kastmasters on trout and it's like fishing on easy mode, especially if you're going on a stocked lake. I don't have a boat and routinely catch 10+ trout a day when I go out because I know the fish behavior of the areas I fish and where they are likely to be even from the bank.

If you don't know an area at all the best strategy is to constantly be on the move, don't spend more than 5 minutes or so in a spot if you don't get some action. Eventually you'll find a spot where the fish hang out.

Well even if you like to keep fish to eat, putting back the big ones still makes sense to maintain the healthiest population of fish in the lake. If you don't care at all about conservation then you're likely a pretty scummy character in general like those people who just keep everything they catch regardless of limits and open seasons etc...

Mm I always follow whatever the limits and size factors are. Around here it’s pretty much if it’s big it’s yours. But I also avoid eating 90% of the lakes. If I really want campfire fish we do dworshak reservoir because it didn’t get polluted by the mining and keeps a fish hatchery on the lake. South end of the saint joe/north elk river area in Idaho.

But we mostly just get big fat rainbows.

Other than that I try to get fishing trips out for salmon and halibut and that’s all bigger better.

This is actually correct.

Also, keep in mind that the longer a fish lives the more toxins from all the fish it eats end up bioaccumulating in the meat, making those smaller to medium sized fish the ones to eat.

Walleye don't get kept over 24" here. those 25-31" fish go back.

In the spawning river where this video was taken, the natives try and take the medium sized fish, as a lot are smaller males. The big females are the ones putting in the work laying eggs, and are generally spared when possible.

The females speared get milked for the eggs and most end up in the fish hatchery where they release over 5 million fry back into the water after they have hatched.
