Remember, kids are a reflection of their parents and elders. That's why I always laugh when they call out the generation they raised for being soft or horrible.

Cliffs are basically that, whether we like it or not, IQ is pretty directly correlated to financial success in life-- i.e., the higher your IQ, the more money you make, regardless of whatever field you're in.

Murray points out that apart from the deficit of industriousness among modern American men (and other factors), the fact that women entered the workplace has created a major social dynamic of workplace dating. So instead of the 1920s when a 180 IQ lawyer would marry his 100 IQ high school sweetheart, now that same lawyer will marry the 160 IQ sloot lawyer across the table from him in the conference room, thus, the successful classes are breeding higher IQ children (whether by nature or nurture, Murray is fairly agnostic on this point) who are in turn succeeding at greater levels than their parents, but at this point it's been happening for generations.

Really a fascinating book with a pretty troubling but extremely well-supported thesis on American economic decline.

Of course there are some very efficient and accessible advantages to all of it as well, but a simple life is a lot less stressful and easier to navigate.

It's all planned out. The entire schooling system is to minimize critical thinking and problem solving to create the perfect slave. The higher IQ's, the wealthy families, and the one's that see through it are the one's that typically rise. As most people sit and suffer in silence at their desk job that pays them enough money to operate a mundane life, the rest start taking advantage of the opportunity that we have today. It's because they have stockholm syndrome with their corporate overlords that they fear risk. The salary is the safety net because it must be there to pay off their debts they are enslaved to. Everyone is taught to play it safe and smart and eventually you'll win with your 401k and horrible health.

It's an absolutely brilliant creation. Fabian Socialism is a brutal system when you look at what it has done to the west.

Tradie to manager to director is essentially a middle manager at an old company like Shell. Theres a guy at PepsiCo who went from Janitor to a divisional President after inventing Cheetos, thats way more impressive

Dude left construction, took an initial hefty pay cut but had recently been promoted to shift lead or something and was back to making more than his old tradie salary, plus full benefits. He said 3 more years and he’s eligible for AM making more than he ever would at his old job and goes to the same store every week (had to travel a lot as tradie) is either home to take kids to school or for dinner every night, guaranteed raises every year. It’s not for everyone but it’s not hard to work up. The bar is so low now that just showing up, getting along with coworkers and management and doing your job is enough that most places will ask if you want a promotion.

Works that way with a lot of restaurants too. A lot of places make claims that "80% of our franchise owners started as cashier's/like cooks" etc.

I kind of think things are better that way. I work (sort of, I'm a poverty consultant) at a giant company that's over 100 years old, maybe the sort you're looking at, and almost everyone here has worked for the company for their entire careers. Most of those in management have worked their way up. The guy right under the CEO started off as an engineer right out of college and got promoted up, he wasn't a tradie, but he only had a 4 year degree from a local state college.

Now they're swapping a lot of those people out with Ivy grads as these old school guys retire. These people know nothing about how this company operates, and make nothing but arrogant and obnoxious decisions that I'd imagine tradies that worked their way up would never make, by the virtue of actually understanding how the company operates, and caring about the company and the people who work for it.

I think there's no question the boomers had it easier, but much of the push for the negative changes that impact us followed them. They had the way paved for them, they slowly destroyed it, and the subsequent generations beat it into the earth. I think it's easy to feel sympathy for people our age and what we have to put up with only interacting with people on the misc and other conservative leaning forums, but have you interacted with many millennials outside of here or your group of friends? How about the generation even younger than that? The people who were out in the streets two years ago for George Floyd, the young college graduates? They vehemently support politicians and policies that got us into this mess. Before I started working where I do now, I was constantly working with people in my age group and younger, and I often feel like we get what we deserve. Maybe you don't, and I don't, but collectively we do.
