For people like us, gyming is fun. For 95% of the population, it is not.

but 95% of the population DOES drive 1 mile to buy groceries, and that is absolutely insane.

I think the only reason we do that in america, is because our infrastructure sucks dick for walking/cycling. You walk along a sidewalk with a 45mph speed limit and feel like you will die at any minute. If ped paths were seperate, or at least had railings to seperate the cars from the pedestrians, people would actually use them.

Now imagine if that infrastructure went to the extreme of the netherlands, where riding a bike was faster than driving.... Now you get almost a 100% participation rate from your population BY DEFAULT.

telling people to take their free hour in the afternoon to hit the gym is not going to work.
Cities like Utrecht were built with biking in mind, and to do that in say...Detroit, would be damn near impossible both logistically and financially. I do understand what you're saying, but we need to start somewhere and a father of 3 paying 5-600 dollars a month to insure his family might start hitting the gym if he knows he can recoup some of that cash. Then it becomes habit forming, and he instills those values into his family. They start walking after dinner. He encourages his wife to buy healthier foods, and there's a cultural shift in the home. Other than that I agree with you.

Was just in Utrecht a few weeks ago. Beautiful place. And yeah good luck getting Detroit to bike. You'd have to worry about being mugged or hit with a stray bullet on top of the usual infrastructure stuff.

This. It really starts from politics and most politicians don't care. You're on your own to lose weight and a lot of Americans don't have the will power.

I'm more concerned with how chitty the drivers are than getting mugged or shot. The drivers here are absolutely the worst. Aloof, reckless, can't deal with changing conditions. Someones getting mowed down for sure.

while this is true, cities in the netherlands have been REMOVING car areas and REPLACING them with pedestrian areas. entire streets, and parking areas have banned cars, thus allowing people to navigate the areas without cars. Every city in the USA could move this same way. los angeles is a literal laughing stock of traffic... it never even crosses their mind that taking a bike would be exponentially faster, and they have FLAWLESS weather year-round LMAO.... absolutely pissening.

also, michigan has started doing rail to trail systems, which is a respectable START to solving the problems of too many cars.

if the infrastructure was correct, and you had an e-bike to ride, it would not be a problem.... I'd argue that getting into a hot ass car that has been sitting in the sun would be worse.

im going to add to this, that often times that "one hour" is completely insufficient to evoke weight loss. The number of calories someone will burn from an hour of gaming is mind glowingly low. Its something like 300 above expected energy expenditure. Obviously this number will vary depending upon the intensity used and type of exercise done, but how many people are going to do go to the gym 5 days a week to lose what amounts to less than a half pound of fat loss per week assuming they dont alter their diet

now the other issue with American obesity is that outside the metropolitan areas like NY and LA, the population density doesnt allow for this kind of infrastructure, Unlike the European countries with very high population densities.

Can confirm this works though. Used to make it a point to work at a specific office when I knew they would have left over pizza or free food after big meetings. This was even before Covid.

EDIT: sorry misread that at first. suburbs CAN accommodate bike infrastructure now more than ever due to E-bikes. I really think the e-bike has potential to change our lives and motivate better pedestrian infrastructure....

imagine raising a child in a pedestrian friendly country..... it would be fuking incredible.

We should also push VR Gaming. VR gaming is way more fun than running on the treadmill for hours at a time.

Really though, people are just tired of the 9 to 5. Your mind is exhausted after staring at a computer screen for so long, it's no wonder people just want to drink and at the bars afterwards. It's the closest thing to relief.

we should have been moving into a mass transit model decades ago, but the auto industry cuckery kept that from happening. Places with warm/warmer climates should have transitioned over to pedestrian areas a long time ago. One city that missed the ball was Atlanta. I'm always going to point at L.A. because it's literally the biggest chithole city on earth and it should be a glowing pedestrian utopia of sun, beaches, walking, cycling, and 70 degrees all year round....

the los angeles forecast this week is highs of 67-77, and lows of 52-56 all week, sun every day... and fat ass motherfukers are sitting in hours upon hours of traffic.

Most peoples diets consist of drinking calories and pre packaged foods.

They know better but refuse to change when its easily right in front of them and fresh real foods are readily available and cheap.

They real problem started when it somehow became a sin for women to know how to cook and care for a family.

These things simply wont get any better. On the bright side, you just have to be normal size to be considered in shape.

agreed, and pedestrian infrastructure would essentially solve childhood obesity.

the average child in the Netherlands rides a bicycle 100 miles per month, and that is mainly just commuting to school. That's probably about 12-15 hours of cycling per month. And the kid learns how to navigate their city, etc.
