Yea I remember this guy was talking with us at a more powerlifting based gym and had me and my buddy do holds with 405lb. I was a 315lb bencher. That felt like it would staple me to the bench just unracking and holding it. 700lbs sounds unimaginable. A reason why only a few men have ever done it.

What's his 1rm at right now? I know he was closing in on 800 lbs.

I've actually had a bench shirt rip on me when i went to press the bar up, thought i was going to die

You should look up a deadlift suit
I've heard multiple people that have world class equipped and raw benches comparing the two. The one thing every single of them has in common is that they all say equipped is much more physically and mentally demanding.

Deadlift suits don't add very much if you look at equipped vs raw records compared to bench shirts and squat suits.

It’s cheating. If you can’t lift the weight in gym shorts and a t shirt you aren’t actually lifting the weight. Suits, shirts, straps, wraps etc are all cope at its finest, come at me.

I can almost see this point. For a casual lifter I see no issue but if we are talking about pr’s/wr’s I don’t think they should be allowed. But I also understand almost everybody on the planet disagrees with my stance.

Agreed. Just like football players wearing cleats are cheating, too. Because if they can't run without slipping in the dirt/mud without them, then it's all cope.

Seriously though, it's just different equipment for a different sport. I've competed a half dozen times raw and never equipped, so I'm not some big gear guy or anything. But when you use a word like cheating, it just doesn't fit.

It would be like a rugby player saying football players are cheating for wearing helmets. It's just a different sport with different equipment.

It would only be cheating if you implied to people that you benched or squatted [insert weight] raw when it was really geared. That's deceptive/cheating.

I can understand his philosophy though in trying to keep lifting pure. It should just be you vs the weights, no extra bullchit. Once you start adding things like suits, straps and belts where you draw the line and say too is too much?

It's terrific, right? So you know, I am in heaven."

Why do you feel compelled to draw the line for others though?

Isn't it enough to draw the line for yourself? That's what I did. A bunch of people I knew and trained with competed geared, and I just wasn't interested. Why should I tell them that they should keep their lifting pure?

I look at raw lifting and different levels of gear as different sports. They keep different records. I like to lift in gear because it's challenging and I am only competing against other people lifting in gear. I'm just not going to be a very good raw lifter, but I don't have anything against raw lifters. Even when you look at raw competition, people wear singlets that are so tight they are basically a single ply squat suit. Same with sleeves and wraps.

With gear you still have the weight on your back or in your hands. It's not like it makes the weight lighter. But you have the added component of learning how to use it to get the most out of it. I'm an average bencher at best; take anyone who benches within 50 lbs of my raw and put us both in the same bench shirt. I'll smoke them by 100 lbs because I'm good at it. You can have ok to poor technique as a raw lifter and still be good. You can be crazy strong with bad technique as a geared lifter and you will suck.

Powerlifting drew the line with raw vs geared. Raw you can use a belt and knee sleeves, gear for suits and knee wraps.

I'll believe it when I see him do it in a comp. So far the only thing he has done is make impressive looking training videos. I hope he is legit for competition's sake but if he is, why hasn't he done anything official yet?
