I've done business in Ghana, which is one of the most successful economies in Africa. If you have 2 meetings in a day where over 50% of the people show up, you have businessmaxxed your day in Africa.

What time is the meeting? "morning". That means we get there at around 9am and sit around and drink powdered coffee until everyone else shows up. Usually around 1030 or 11. Half the people don't show up, including usually the person who was the entire reason the meeting was held. So then you decide if you are going to actually start and have the meeting. You decide to start the meeting and as soon as you start talking the guy beside you's blackberry rings and he just loudly answers it in the middle of the meeting while you are talking. This continues throughout the entire meeting with the blackberries. At some point in the meeting its lunch and then the meeting stops regardless of whether you are done are not, because don't you know we are government employees and they mandate the lunch hour is strictly adhered to. That is half the day gone.

Then after lunch, you repeat the process with your meeting that was scheduled for "afternoon". We would fly people in from all over the world for these meetings and half the Ghana officials would just not show up after I just spent 25 hours on a plane getting there. Good times.

Live on Lanai , it's paradise only 3000 people on the whole island, a hundred or so day trippers from maui a day and a few hundred billionaire tourists at the 2 5star hotels.

i live in oahu and can confirm. everyone here is on that aloha time. whats worse is when you are dealing with filipinos; aloha time + filipino time=very long wait

the shipyard industry there is a different culture since they have deadlines and obligations to meet. if they dont meet them, then its a domino effect on the rest of the ships getting serviced, which causes more delays and more money, and ruins the deployment schedule for the ships.

tourism and the businesses that support them have the upper hand because there are no other options, so all you can do is hurry up and wait. covid also changed how they operate; hotels are charging the same but have less staff, so less room services. restaurants also have less staff but the volume of customers have increased. the month of march had more people visiting than pre-covid 2019, and thats without international travel. once international travel picks up, hotels and restaurants will be at full capacity
