So from my understanding he locked himself in ONE specific classroom and cops stood outside that classroom door for about 40 minutes thinking it was a barricaded suspect inside?

Well why tf didn’t the use the windows then too?? Or why didn’t the use the general key earlier and going in as soon as there were still shots inside?

The whole department should resign srs

And most of the times police officers are badly trained and badly picked in the US. There should be a much better police reform than to refund them but to get more competent officers in charge.

Tbf rural cops never were the most experienced and professional police men. That first Rambo movie always had a true core to that

I turned on cops 2 years ago when they all enforced the lockdowns. They stopped people from going to work and providing for their families, but the cops didn't care because they still had a job and paycheck themselves.

It made me realize that most cops will put their own paycheck above doing the right thing. "Just following orders bro"

Most people care about money than doing the right thing. If Bill Gates offered you 1 million a year to shill for him...what would you do?

Most people are like this sadly. Worked for a huge corporation that was working everyone to death. When Covid hit half the people quit, the other half had a chance to protest better working conditions and decided to bow down to all mighty dollar rather than work together for better wages.

It really speaks volumes to how dangerous AR15s and assault style weapons can be. A kid who just turned 18 got 1 and he put enough fear into the police department to stay away for nearly an hour.

When will people realize that the police force is an extension of the big government you whine about to extort more money from the populous. You really think their main job/purpose is to stop shooters, or to write tickets and fines and just get money for the state?

Its not surprising either, this whole thing is a reflection on the country as a whole. We are soft, out of shape blobs. Nothing keeps us hard anymore. No one wants to risk anything. Its all about keeping the masses in check.

youd be better off disbanding the police force and keeping a volunteer SWAT or tact team of ex vets on call for things like this. I bet theres dozens of actually trained war vets who would speed over to that school to shoot a twink in an instant if they got an alert.

It's idiotic to lump an entire demographic into a neat little box.
Some cops are cowards, some are tyrants, some are genuinely trying to enforce law morally.

Can you name one active school shooter scenario where the cops acted appropriately?

Or we defund police, take away all their toys and tact gear. Use them to write tickets and respond to low stress calls they can handle. Train them for worst case scenarios of if so woo will pulls a gun on them during a stop and hope they can handle it, if not oh well not much lost in terms of money spent training because they have now been defunded. Move all the resources saved from defunding to bolster SWAT teams and hire ex military with combat experience to man schools in plain clothes. Use SWAT to respond to high stress situations and active shooter/ riots. Any good cops want to transfer can transfer.

Even here in Canada cops are woefully undertrained and unqualified. I have several who are friends and basically once you get into the academy it's 20 weeks of schooling and then six months with a training officer. I'm assuming it's the same in the States. There's a massive blue line mentality and many cops are corrupt.

I owned a house in a rough neighbourhood so volunteered on the community board and dealt with a lot of cops through attempted crime prevention. Almost all of them were essentially useless. They didn't care at all about prevention, just major crimes they could easily get arrests for. Zero community presence. I have zero need for police and know that calling them is basically useless.

No one should be absolutely pro-police or anti-police. Everyone should be in favor of good cops, and want to rid departments of bad ones and see them held accountable for illegal/immoral acts. It's okay to be supportive of police but still critique them, or hate the police but still acknowledge they're just humans doing a job and will make honest mistakes.

there are bad apples everywhere, and law enforcement is no different. problem is, no one wants to pay for a bigger budget for better mental evaluations and other things that would contribute to a safer society. they want to b*tch about how lots of departments dont have active shooter training, but then want to defund the police. you cant have it both ways. either you want every single LEO in america to be mentally fit (via pre-hiring eval) and have 100% of the equipment they need and are willing to spend the tax dollars on it, or you dont. you cant have bits and pieces of the puzzle.

as for what happened inside the school, my only guess is the LEOs knew that until he was out of ammo, going up to the door meant certain death.

i stand by the fact that a sharp shooter should have been put on top of literally anything, and picked off the sob straightaway. that would have been my first move as an on scene commander. someone get on the fukking roof and take this mother****** out. the rest of us will stay here in the hallway and put 4-5 on each side of each of the doors for the time being.

havent been in this scenario myself so i cant speak to what its like walking in to your certain death. or trying to shoot the lock off a door which i bet only works in movies.

seems they could have done a hell of a lot more. what that is, not sure yet. perhaps pop rounds up in to the classroom or at the door itself as safely as possible.

Exactly. They sure do like pulling everyone over and barking orders as if they are the ultimate authority over everyone’s life (in many cases when nobody has even broken the law). I’ve never been shy about my dislike of cops. The majority of them are completely big headed over their badge and even act that way off duty. With that being said, I support them when some criminal is pulling a weapon on them or trying to fight them while resisting. Not every cop falls into the bad category but a lot of them sure do. The job is just too much of a bitch boy magnet not to be full of those types.

Not gonna be anti police because one department sucks. It's a catch 22 with police because if you want better applicants, you need to pay them more. But how do you pay them more when everyone wants to defund the police? You need to fund the police but better allocate the funds. Good luck doing that in America in 2022

Retirement unfortunetly may be closer then i desire. Ive been out on light duty since Tuesday, I injured my hand loading my duty bag. I'll try and rehab it, but if I can't get it back to where I can perform, I'll have to take a 66 2/3% disability pension from the department. It'll be a pay cut, but it's tax free, which helps. It'll give me more time to misc though, and just collect those sweet sweet pension payments.

Not a single cop from my department enforced a single lockdown restriction. If we got calls about a business being open we'd go and support the business and tell them someone was complaining (since we're obligated to go). But not every department is the same, obviously.

It's also hard because with the variety of jobs cops do, there's not really a one size fits all applicant. The college grad with no life experience is going to be good at community service type stuff and report writing, but he will generally be a huge dick to people because he has never had a negative interaction with the police before since he was a goodie two shoes, and will constantly big dick people for little things, talk down to people, and think he's cool for having a gun.

The military combat vet will probably not take as much of people's BS community service wise, and will generally be seen as a more lazy cop (because they're not making tons of useless arrests/cites thinking it's badass) but when an active critical incident happens they're generally more johnny on the spot (huge generalizations made, of course).

Finding someone that's going to be well rounded is hard. I personally think looking for life experience first is better, because once you become a cop, that's your profession, there's not really going back to before you were a cop. You never get to experience the negative interactions with cops and realize what a hassle and how life altering that single interaction can be, shaping the image of police forever.

Valuing education is obviously important too. Too many departments offer little (like 3-6%) bonus for getting an education (BA/BS). There is normally no incentive to get a masters. Start offering significantly higher pay for higher education instead of making it a useless "investment" for cops and you'll see more cops getting educated and generally understanding their position in society better (in terms of what people want, what actually works, etc, not how police want to see themselves, etc).

A few of my friends are cops and they're the good ones: others? Don't care for. Never have.

Never forgot a time a friend of mine was cutting lawns and was on his last house in the heat, accidentally left the keys in his truck and his dog was inside the truck.

Called a non emergency number to help out and the cop was such a genuine piece of chit a friends dad wanted his badge number as he worked for the city.

He screamed my buddy is wasting his time, said he can't help him, then wrote him a ticket for having tints (my buddy had had a permit for the tints and it was overturned).

Chit was pathetic.

The back the blue thing is cringey . Too much grown adult badge chasers. It's weird

i turned on police when they sat there and watched cities burn in summer 2020 and were busy harassing parents who were outside their homes with their kids.

I respond to an accident where a guy is hammered drunk and crashed into 3 cars. I arrest him for DUI and he starts screaming I'm arresting him because he's black. I get paid 6 figures a year, get a ton of time off, a golden retirement plan and benefits. And the anti police narrative the left is forcing onto everyone has honestly only made my job easier. People don't expect anything out of us anymore. As long as they keep paying me, I'll keep showing up.

Edit: if there was ever a school shooting at an elementary school, I believe I'd go in. Based on my experience with society, kids are the only thing really worth saving or dying for. Adults? I mean the majority suck, so no.
thank you for proving everyones point on police.

"i get paid 6 figures a year, get ton of time off..."

I started to sour on cops during the covid lockdowns with many departments gleefully enforcing Draconian lockdowns.

This thing in Texas, though, I've got from souring to outright distrust, dislike and scorn.

Seeing those cowards, more than ever it reinforces how we all need to be armed and be trained to properly use them. These cops are not there for us, they are there for their bosses and the establishment.

(I think I stupidly snipped where he said he'd probably have gone in were it him) No offense, but I doubt it. The order to hide and allow the shooter to run wild was from the top. Have you once defied an order given you? You might have wanted to go in but I think as much as you seem to love your job, you'd have sat back as ordered and kept it.

The Feds that came in, finally, after they disregarded the orders to stand down.

I'm built different kiddo. I'm a one man wrecking crew.
Survival. When the jungle tears itself down and builds itself into something new. Guys like you and me, we end up dead. Doesn’t really mean anything. Or, if we happen to live through it, well that doesn’t mean anything either.

I'd say this is what has always surprised me a bit miscers. We as a whole pretend to be all conservative and trad and daddy government bad and at least up until this most recent tragedy, would open our ENTIRE throats for some random government lunatic going on a power trip. It's refreshing to see the tides change a bit and not over the top, either. I have not seen any defund the popo comments nor have I seen "well go live at Chaz if you don't like it!" testerics. I'm all for criticism of the government, especially right now.
