If you want to know what Capitalism actually is you should read Adam Smith's book about it.
It's a pretty easy read.
Capitalism would be much like communism only it's about sharing capital and investing in workers. In other words, the money is flowing around to everyone.
We do not have anywhere near capitalism in the US.

My perspective is from having to do it and make the call more than a few times. Somewhere in between the rumors and the ultimate action lies the truth in what your "friends" are telling you.
Never about performance? Come on, read that over and over again and see how ludicrous and emotional that sounds.
My experience in corp america has typically been that upper management passed down to me a number that needed to be cut and it was either completely my decision or it was co-guided.
In most cases it was pretty clear cut who the top performers were from the bottom.
In one case all my team were rock stars (designed that way.....already moved the under performers out) and I made the case to upper management and I was able to keep everyone.
I am not saying this is how it always is.....but that was my experience which is different from what your friends told you.
But if you haven taken the advice of your "past managers" about taking it easy for said reasons.....then yes that will show pretty easily and I can see how someone like that would be on the bottom of my list even if they were marginally out producing someone that was trying hard. I can coach and skill up someone. I dont have the time to fix lazy and negative in a fast moving world.

Conspicuous Consumption is where people buy expensive things to be seen buying expensive things.
That puts rich people on an endless treadmill of buying the next big thing.
It demoralizes poor people, who do most of the work in society, because it makes their work seem pointless and so they will not do it well.
Commodity Fetish is where a certain brand seems like "the best" or the only thing to have, when it's really a pretty mundane item.
For instance, you can have very expensive Nike sneakers and covet them. However, you then find out they are "Chinese knockoffs" and because very disappointed. Meanwhile, they are the exact same design and materials as Nike, but you THINK they are fake.
They are exactly the same thing but you have a "fetish" (means unless obsession) with what you believe is a product of the Nike company.
So, stopping people from buying yachts and eliminating "luxury goods" when improve mental health and morale for everyone.

lol
also a yacht isn't a mundane item, so the commodity fetish doesn't come into play. In fact, I'd say the majority of high end goods don't because of their quality alone like large houses, super cars, expensive food, and even vacations in exotic places.
Secondly, limiting someone's freedom to raise morale sounds like a terrible idea.

- Lobbying lawmakers to eliminate laws that prevent foreign countries from buying strategic utility assets (i.e. your telecom, electricity grid, gas, internet stack etc). Think China acquiring internet infra, ports etc.
- Lobbying lawmakers to introduce regulations that ponzify real estate (i.e. relaxing foreign investment, planning regulations in cities that prevent high-density development, low land tax, allowing people to own multiple properties in capital cities, allowing people to buy properties through superannuation funds at a reduced tax rate, allowing rental expenses that exceed rental income to be claimed as a income deduction).
