Give it some time.

Also are we gonna act as if mental illness isn't rampant around here?

A few years ago I could have made threads about shapeshifting reptilians and had a handful of people agreeing with me.

I can buy more ammo which is easy and relatively cheap. But who is gonna try to take people’s guns if they know sh!t is about to hit the fan? Who is gonna sign up for that? Cops and/or the military? Those guys usually side with the constitution and are probably smart enough to know the insane casualty rate that comes with clearing houses. Even in this liberal state of NY, I know sooooo many people who have mini arsenals of guns. It’s not rare at all.

I obviously have the money to buy the stuff I have, but at the moment I can’t really buy land in the middle of nowhere and convince a bunch of family/friends/acquaintances to go in on building some fortress. It’s just not practical to me.

Even if I got a bunch of like-minded friends to do this with, (which isn’t easy), they’re gonna prioritize their families and possibly take me and the rest of the group out to hoard the supplies for themselves. During an event like this, family is gonna take priority over friends no matter how long you’ve known each other.
I get your mindest ;however it's flawed. You have to consider how bleak things will be. Cops are wards of the state, when things are breaking down they're not going to just abandon that. They will look to restore law and order, because the state will demand it. There will be a consolidation of resources and they will still want to provide their families with the best possible outcome, and if that means biting the bullet and sticking it to you, they will do so. That's how police states work. "Hey Sgt Andrew...you can come live here behind these ivory towers, or you can go huff it in the bush with the rest of them...what's your choice?". You're building pacts with people you can trust with your life. You train together, stockpile together, build together...Is there a chance they could backstab you? Sure? But unless they're planning on killing you and the rest of the group it would be absolutely ridiculous to take on the rest of the world alone. Unless you're some GIGA ALPHA, retired SF, lone wolf , you're not going to make it alone. The people you prep with understand this. They understand the benefit of community, and would never turn their back on the group for food, supplies they can't ever eat, or use.

The thing is, you can’t really go all in on one extreme to the other where you’re connected to society extremely well and also have the perfect survival plan for if/when sh!t hits the fan.

If you’re in a big city and have only a few days of supplies, you’re taking a risk in hopes of things not falling apart.

If you live out in the middle of nowhere with all the supplies you could possibly need, you’re taking a risk if sh!t never really hits the fan.

Obviously it would be best to sit on both sides of the fence but not everyone can afford to do that. I don’t wanna fall on either end of the spectrum so I’m in the middle where it’s not too huge of a financial investment to cover my ass to a certain extent.

I see what you’re saying and I don’t wanna disagree since it seems like you’ve done more research than me, whereas I might be going off of conjecture. But I still can’t let go of thinking how demoralizing it would be for cops/military to have the balls to try and clear houses of guns. Unless they have some kind of high-tech full body armor that is mass produced and strong enough to stop armor piercing rounds, it just seems like too much to ask. I feel like going on the offensive is suicide in a heavily armed populace. But I may just be thick headed and unable to see how people would be up for such a difficult task.

Fair enough. Same thing with Florida not having basements with all the rain/hurricanes. I guess in your case a shed might be necessary or just use up a room inside your house.

If you can afford weapons and ammo, you can afford food rations. Why rely on putting yourself at such a high risk by going on the offensive to gather other people’s food/supplies when you can have your own and maintain a defensive position for as long as you can?

The big jump in price is when you get into buying a whole other house in the middle of nowhere with all the supplies located there. That’s where I’d say you’d be taking things to the next level. And if you can easily afford that then by all means go for it. But right now I can afford all the supplies I have and some more to some extent. But I can’t afford to make the big jump and purchase another house off the grid just yet.

I would say the difference is the extent to which doomsday preppers get carried away with it and let it become a full blown hobby.

I used to watch that show and always get amazed at how they let their prepping become such an integral part of their lives. Constantly expanding, taking over their house, and always on their minds. Felt like a cringey LARP.

To me it should be treated as a 'set it and forget it' type deal. Decide what you want to prepare for and how much you might need, get that stuff, and then forget about it and move on with your life. Don't buy an extra can of beans every time you're at the store because Yellowstone might erupt.

This is my mindset exactly. I don’t wanna get obsessed like that to the point where on some level I want that whole “I told you so” mindset where you’re kinda hoping sh!t will hit the fan to justify going all in on such a venture. I just wanna find a happy medium where I can survive a catastrophe that’s gonna get back to normal at some point, but not to the level where things will never be the same and I gotta live in some post-apocalyptic world. At that point I think the living will envy the dead.

you're not wrong breh...There will be push back, and you'll be bushed. Confined to rural areas. But you'd be surprised at how many people would comply just to keep a semblance of the life they had before. Just look at COVID and the vaxx...How many buckled just to keep their lives rolling as smoothly as possible.

This is the "being a reasonably self-reliant and responsible human" level of prepping. Should be taught in school just to improve overall community resilience.

I've been trying to get to this point. Limited means so it isn't quick or exciting. In the past [about 4 years ago] I stockpiled and kept a deep pantry just as a regular habit. Here I've been in disarray for so long, and continue to be. But I'm actively building up regular shelf stable food [not 10-20 year stuff].

I went ahead and invested in a small chest freezer and I'm stocking up on big sales, scanning for markdowns/closeouts, shopping Aldi and Dollar Tree for value. I've lucked in to some good closeouts at Kroger- organic oatmeal, maple syrup, and natural PB.

Dollar Tree has some shelf stable milk for $1.25 which isn't super exciting, but should make it easier to use the cheap boxes of cereal and is pretty decent vs. the high price and less than great taste of powdered milk. Also grabbed some vienna sausage and canned alfredo which I don't expect to be amazing, but I thought it would be good enough for beanie wienies and to put with pasta or rice and canned chicken or tuna.

Oh, and Goya refried beans...these are better than most IMO and at Kroger they are about $2 a can now vs. $1.25 at Dollar Tree.

Seriously planning to organize this mess today.

And I'm not under the delusion that I've got everything covered here- this is about rising prices and forecasts of even higher prices and less availability for the foreseeable future.

Doomsday schmucks are the dudes that spend money on tactical vests, tactical flashlights, tactical radios, tactical firearms, tactical ammo, tactical food rations.... tactical everything....

.... but when the SHTF they would tremble in fear like a pack of cowards....

How many so-called "Patriotic Americans" openly said that there'd be hell to pay if the election was stolen in 2020? Guess what, the election was stolen and they didn't do jack sh/t, and they still ain't doing jack sh/t while Democrats ignore the border and openly encourage the molestation of children....

How many of these "Patriotic Americans" will be taking their kids to see the next globohomo Marvel movie...????....

As a reasonable prepper, I can say there is no way you have 10 years of food stored. Not unless you have a dedicated warehouse.

A 6-month supply for 2 would fill up a closet.

I have about a 6-month supply and realized I'm not getting more into my apt. I have 2(1 in Baltimore and 1 NYC)

And honestly, if the SHTF, you need a pistol. 2 long guns ain't gonna cut it.

I have 11 guns that only use about 5 different calibers to keep it simple. Ammo will be the new gold(tho I keep some gold and platinum too)

I mean it all depends on how you ration it. I’d have to check my inventory but I have a ton of vaccuum sealed brown rice, black beans, quinoa, powdered eggs, powdered milk, 20 year shelf life meal kits, etc. i did the math a long time ago and it does add up to about 10 years of food. My basement is huge and I have a whole room stacked with those rations. You’d have to move a whole bunch of rows of those stacks to get to the back of that room. I’m not sure about how long the 8 propane tanks will last me since I couldn’t gauge how much of it I’d use each day but I don’t know how many more than 8 I’d wanna have. I already feel like I’m going overboard with that many as it is. Never said I had the perfect plan but I know I’m doing way more than the average person I think.

A shotgun with 200 shells and an M1 Garand with 500 30-06 rounds doesn’t seem like a bad fix but I could get more easily. I’m not seeing the need for a handgun. I sold all 3 of mine to my brother because he offered me a good price. Except for the Civil War Ruger revolver I have which is a black powder gun but takes fukking forever to reload. Not seeing why I’d need another handgun more than extra rounds for my M1 and shotty.

That M1 has never jammed on me once and packs a hell of a punch. All 500 rounds are FMJ’s. It’s honestly an amazing rifle that stood the test of time and is also quick as hell to reload. Idk why I would need a pistol in a defensive position but you’re a military guy and know more than me.

I just don’t understand why you would think that robbing preppers is such an easy thing to do. If you’re a prepper with even half a brain then you have guns to protect your supplies. Why would you put yourself at such huge risk stealing from other preppers by going on the offensive when you could have all the essentials in your own home? I'm banking on general stupidity of Joe Public coupled with a general lack of street smarts.

I've said before I know people with worthy degrees who were morons.

LMFAO at you taking it personal and getting mad.

You'd be my first victim.

Just because a person is a prepper doesn't make them cunning.

And when **** hits the fan and there are now laws then cunning and deceit are what will keep you alive.

Bro I am not mad at all, seriously. I don’t really get mad at people on the internet and my temperament is not one that is emotionally volatile. I simply said that I think a defensive strategy where you already have the supplies you need would be ideal. What about that mindset bothers you and jumps to the conclusion that I’m mad? Lol. You don’t know who is armed and who isn’t, do you?

It’s not a 100 gallon tank. It’s 20 5 gallon tanks and yes I clean/sanitize them and change them out every 6 months.

The difference is where the line is drawn. Every individual makes their own personal call on that.

Better to have it and not need it can be right under certain circumstances and wrong in equally the same amounts. Thats not a universal rule to live my IMO.

It's OK sonny just know if **** popped off the last thing you'd want is me on the other side of you.

I'd make you hand everything over on some Bane/Heaven's Gate type stuff.

One of the things missing is you thinking you would stay in your house. We have a meeting point at a family members ranch out in BFE.

This is the difference between a smart person and one that is not......the answer to your origintal question.

The smart person understands what is important and prioritizes.
LOL at having water a a few rounds and thinking you can board up your windows in your house in LI and be ok.

most important is a remote location to meet up with close network of friends. Most of those I have are ex-military or ones that grew up in the country in texas. That part of the plan is first priority and solidified.
I just need enough ammo and gas to get to the rendezvous point

Well if I can’t get out to Kansas where I have family that has an ideal setup then I gotta hold it down in my current house. I could stay inside for a while with the provisions that I have and maybe go in the backyard for rain water if I don’t think my neighbors are gonna shoot my ass down. If you have a rendezvous point then that’s great but if you don’t then you gotta make due with whatever you have.
