Dude contractors are such crooks lmao

So I need a french drain installed on one side of my house. Had a couple contractors come out essentially they need to dig a 60' trench and lay 60' of sloped perforated PVC pipe. Labor would be $2090 (no problem) and materials would be $700 (fkn lol). Told him he has a deal if I can supply my own materials and pay the $2090 for labor. He tells me that works and gives me an estimate reflecting this.

A couple days later, I call him with my credit card ready to go. He tells me his boss told him I can't supply the materials and they'll only do it if they supply the materials. Maximum bait and switch.

Do you know how much 60' of perforated PVC pipe costs? It costs $54 max at full retail price. They would like to charge me $700 for supplying $54 of pipe. That is a 1,300% mark up. This company literally went back on what they told me just so they can charge me 1,300% on materials. Fkn lol.

Just wrote this idiot an email telling him I don't want his pipe and to fist himself lol. Unbelievable.

As a contractor myself, 10 times out of 10 when the home owners “supplies” his own materials, there is problems. They shouldn’t have done a bait and switch and material does seeem high. There’s rocks, fabrics, a lot more too it I’m sure. If not, I’d recommend renting a mini skid steer or back hoe and doing it yourself

You are the worst kind of customer. If you know how to do the job at such a low cost then do it yourself. The owner probably walked away because he could see from a mile away you are a headache.

I hate contractors with a burning passion. They take every job and swear they can do it. Do it sloppy and whatever it takes to get the job done and move onto the nice job. Zero pride and craftsmanship anymore. Managers who are supposed to oversee them don't do ****

You're probably better off finding a tradie on Craigslist and do it for half the price. I have a personal non contract/licensed tradie handy man that does house work for me. He does a good job for half the price as licensed contractors. I refer him to all my friends

I had a client call me today telling me he found a much cheaper quote "online" and that my quote was too expensive after already closing with me 2 hrs before. I proceeded to politely school him on how he is basically an idiot who doesn't chit, he ended up apologizing at the end.

Yelp, next door, word of mouth etc are all useless

“Unskilled” labor is expensive especially when you throw in general liability and workers comp insurance, then there are tools and vehicles to maintain.

Because how can you take the word of some literal dumbass costumer as an objective opinion?

Example, today I had a customer told me "but that doesn't fit there" to which I had to reply after bert staring "this is just a sample, mam".

No single review is evidence of anything, you have to read dozens and try to find a negative or positive pattern to get a ballpark idea if the vendor is offering a good service/product or not.

Had to dig a trench corner to corner in a small 7 car parking lot to pull/upgrade the wire from the utility pole.. $5k just for sketches (that pissed me off).. Other than that, a tiny, easy job.. It included 3 200a panels (whoopdie-doo). Permits, electric company, asbestos testing (scam), blah blah blah.. The contractor basically threw the book at me which is why it ended up being so much.

He didn't lift a finger. He had a couple of tradie workers doing ALL of the work, he was rarely on site. When he was, he was kickin it on some portable rubbermaid table. Those tradies were probably making $20-$30 per hour.. They were cool ass, smart hard working employees though. I'm not using the term "tradie" in a derogatory fashion.

For a contractor to do a job they require $X per hour. Now if they provide materials they will naturally mark them up and then quote a lesser quote for labor. If you provide the materials then they would just provide a quote with the labour portion being more expensive than usual. Their time is the most valuable part, not the materials. They will likely still want to make the same amount of money for the job regardless of who provides materials. Not to mention you might be providing the wrong materials or of a low quality which could reflect poorly on the contractor.

In short you're in the wrong here OP, sorry brah.

They can ask any price they want to, you don't have to say yes. This is how you work this deal.

Ask for an itemized list of materials and their costs including quantities and brand name with part numbers. If they do this, do your own research and then call asking why their prices are so high. "hey you can get this at Home Depot for X but you are charging Y". If they use an expensive brand they should be able to explain why they are using that brand. If they won't do these things they are just shady AF and don't use them even if they do use your materials. Get another estimate. Honestly at this point I would just start off fresh with someone new because you've already kind of messed up that one.
