Earning a higher income is an easier habit to maintain than being frugal.
Yes it’s more work up-front. You have to either study, or grind for a promotion, or apply for other higher paying jobs externally.
But once that’s done, it’s unlikely that you’ll backslide. Your qualifications don’t disappear and it’s unlikely you’ll accept some lower paying job.
By contrast, depriving yourself of enjoyment will always be a drag, and get worse the longer you do it. You can relapse into old spending habits with the virtual swipe of a credit card.
TLDR: A higher income is easier to maintain than frugal spending habits

Balance is probably where it’s at. Though I agree that it’s usually more sensible to spend your time increasing your income, rather than being frugal with it. Sometimes one requires the other though, at least in the early part of the game.

I agree. My dad is always spending tons of time trying to pinch pennies and save money, and it results in him having a really chittty quality of life for a 70 year old guy worth about $50M. But he mostly got lucky, and happened to start buying Real Estate in the 1970s without actually being good at using it to earn money.
I actually earn more money than him and have higher quality of life, which is absolutely absurd.

There's a point where being frugal is dumb as fukk, of course there's a desired balance. Do you plan to live with millions in your bank and having your inconsiderate children inherit it to only blow it on garbage? (Ded fkn Srs)

Yea this has been true for a while. Something I didn't learn until 2020 tbh. I got too caught up in saving over earning.
Cash flow/earning creation is much more important than saving, especially in times like these. It opens all the doors.
So you are correct OP. Thank you for your wisdom. In the process of working on this.

Yeah cash flow is key. I'm a uni student and I have only begun to understand this.
I'm doing 3 majors and will be working a government-related tech internship in the fall as well as multiple research projects this year with the eventual goal of doing a PhD (or MS depending) in 2 years. Life is difficult but not "difficult" yet. Not like I have kids or a wife or any real commitments yet.
I go to a pretty good university and it honestly surprises me how many of the students here make some realllllly bad decisions during their undergrad tbh. I see a lot of people here party every other day and get awful grades in their coursework (not like I haven't but I kept it under control for when I did). Also a lot of people who major in some useless ****.

I disagree. To make money you have to actually earn it. To save money, you already earned it and you just have to not throw it away like an idiot
Obviously you should do both though. Can't get rich by pinching pennies

I don’t do mortgages anymore, or buy and hold. I do subdivision and new development, but obviously the earlier investments got me the capital to get into what I’m doing now.
How did I get the income to finance the original purchase? Wagecelling, and a lot of study/qualifications that I got my work to pay for. But that’s a whole other story which involves a lot of caffeine and very little sleep for many years.

What the OP is taking about is people who earn like $300k+ at minimum who might pinch pennies in certain situations but they have an abundance mentality so it really doesn't matter if they do or don't.
Would you feel uncomfortable about spending $3000 on a really fun weekend to NYC with friends? If the answer is yes, then you aren't making enough money to be included in this conversation.

If yoursoul focusis making money, you need to price your time.
If you can reliably make x amount per hour, pay somebody else to do any activity that saves you/generates you less than x per hour.
If it takes you 1/2 hour to make dinner and buying dinner costs less than 1/2 hour of your time; buy dinner.
Same for cleaning, laundry, washing your car, fixing your house etc
Your objective is the greatest net increase per hour of your time.

I couldn't tell you exactly where the line is or if it is based on a dollar amount or a time period, but at some level people go from rich [impressing other people like it matters] to wealthy [do not give a single f*k and do what they like because they have no one to impress]. See: Donald Trump eating McDonald's, Warren Buffet and pretty much everything, Elon Musk living in a $50K prefab house, etc.

Anyway the greatest gift for me was almost being killed and suffering a broken neck and brain injury which took me about a year to recover from. I swore off 'stuff' almost completely. I got rid of all employees and closed both businesses. I have never gone back. I took a few years off, and now I only work by myself. I have less these days but am more than comfortable. No debt and could retire tomorrow with enough income from real-estate investments. But I still enjoy working and will probably never retire.
And, I just put a lift in my garage. My daughter goes off to college tomorrow for first time. I put her car on the lift and changed the oil before she went. She came out in the garage with me and I showed her how it was done.
I just cant imagine not doing thigs for myself. I also want to set an example for my kids (who are growing up with much more than I ever have) that hard work and self-reliance are the things that make you successful in life.

I think what it really comes down to is:
1. You need to earn enough to maintain a lifestyle you can be at peace with. There are people who will earn more, but that usually comes with higher hours expectations/stress (most jobs) or a lot of risk (entrepreneurship).
2. The lifestyle you're happy with is an evolving concept. As a young 20-something, I thought I wouldn't be happy unless I had a 5 BDR house, a $60K sports car, etc. Now that I'm older and have seen the bullchit that is Corporate America and the politics, I realize that trading dollars for my health, family/friends, etc. isn't worth it to me beyond a certain point. I'd rather be fit as a fiddle and time to spend with my friends/hobbies instead of sucking my boss's balls for another promotion to buy chit that doesn't really fulfill me for a job that isn't my passion.
3. Cutting frivolous spending and investing that money has been one of the biggest game changers for me in my lifetime. Watching my investments compound, avoiding toxic people/activities I don't like just because others do it, and still being able to spend big on stuff I actually like has immensely improved my happiness.
I'm not a poorcel, btw. I make over $160K in TC (not in NYC or Commiefornia either, btw), excluding including all my investment income. I just think there's more to life than chasing after material goods or impressing shallow people with job titles.
TL;DR - earn enough money so you can spend big on the things you really enjoy and phuck the rest.

I was a very well for myself by 28 but that did not make me happy. Nothing did. By 30 I had a 10,000 sqft house and literally 3 helicopters. I just kept thinking about the next thing.

I was never after moneyper se, I just liked being good at what I do (and I amverygood). Money was a consequence of that, which let me do even cooler stuff, which then made me even more money.
When my circumstance changed (becoming a father), I bought the "forever" house, dropped down from 80 hours a week to 40 (half of that working from home) and I'd rather sit by the lake feeding the ducks with the munchkin than spend my time being billy big bollocks.
Screw nature; my body will do what I DAMN WELL tell it to do!
The only dangerous thing about an exercise is the person doing it.
They had the technology to rebuild me. They made me better, stronger, faster......

I just dropped $320 Australian pesos on a pair of Nike savaleos, great investment
I walk around in ASICS gel at $300 a pop
My pupper is CEO 10km/day so I wear through them fast too
Still way way cheaper than knee surgery
Shoes are one thing I would never ever cheap out on
