Sure. I wear them out properly.

But I make sure they’re fit for purpose (which unfortunately = $$) and certainly don’t keep them once they have holes in the soles or even close to that point

Well you are not frugal then. You happen to like cars, that’s what you spend money on, but there is no possible argument you can make that you could not live without it.

Perhaps you could argue that *some* of the cars you have are financially a sound investment.

However as someone that has modified cars extensively I can say
a) they’re a money pit
b) they’re a time sink
c) modified cars cannot be resold for even a small fraction of the build cost

I’ve seen the lotus build I know what these cost

And hey it’s great to have hobbies and you clearly did well in life to afford those hobbies in particular

But you are not frugal (that’s a good thing)

We only get so many trips around the sun

I'm easily content and a minimalist. I'm not a baller, but I make a respectable income.

Works for me. In a perfect world I'd already have enough money to never have to wagecel again though, but I'm kind of lazy (as far as getting side hustles/other income streams going) and again...I love simplicity/minimalism so don't really want the extra headache either.

Easier with a good income don’t get me wrong but know plenty of big earners living too high on the hog. You think you’ll never go back in income? Count your blessings. All it takes is a major recession (2008) , industry shift , or losing your job at a certain age and being age discriminated against for new roles

The thing about money is that you can always make more but when it comes to having your money make money time is limited. So although you shouldn't budget to point of uncomfortability (depending on income), there has to be some sense of frugality until you can make the proper investments. Never know what could happen and the money you save could end up saving you.
Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; and if it is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.

It's all about balance.

You should always strive to make more money if you aren't stressed out doing it and it doesn't negatively impact your physical or mental health.

And of course, not being so frugal that you don't buy a nice pair of shoes that aren't going to fuk up your knees long term because you're being cheap.

I'm not so frugal that I don't go on vacation, but I also don't book the nicest hotel if I'm sight seeing and only sleeping in the bed for a few hours.

Starting out poor with a frugal mindset has set me up quite well now that I'm making more money. Now I am more picky about what I buy. The functionality and quality is more important than the price. Air Pods are a great example. They're one of the highest priced buds, but it doesn't mean they're the best, but most people assume they are. And if you want to spend the same amount of money, you can find a ton of different better quality options that don't have marketing costs associated with them.

Recently bought a new LED TV. Could have spent $2k-3k on QLED or OLED, but the $400 TV I bought has Dolby Vision and looked just as good as OLED. OLED was marginally better. Not $2k better.

Can confirm that grinding hard for years allows you to settle and breathe and just chill. It's the price of admission for a comfortable existence.

this is where i am but i have hobbies that could turn into side hustles should i decide to go that route.
right now i have better things to do than build and maintain a 3d printer farm or spend the day babysitting a CNC machine or laser.
could i make more if i side hustled? yes.
but do i want to and is it worth it to me? not now.

here is the thing though, people who seemingly are hellbent on just spending every penny they make don't change when they make more money from what i've seen.
they just spend more.
so nothing really changes.
