Crazy how Americans go to college for degrees other than STEM when it is so expensive.

I look at most degrees in Norway as a waste of time Even tho they are FREE. Now imagine paying 100k USd for that same degree & EARNING LESS

What do you expect for a glorified babysitter?

Why not teach at some over-priced college for real money instead of elementary schools where all you have to teach them is not to chit their pants?

My thing is that they get summers/holidays off.

So if you extrapolate their annual working days to a normal career, its actually a good salary when you consider they also get very good benefits+pension.

If they teach summer school and/or do freelance summer tutoring on the side, then u can actually make good money.

You shouldnt be going to private schools with that much debt to enter into education. Thats the problem.
People thinking degree cost should be commensurate with compensation.
No, certain degrees at certain schools are meant for rich people, certain degrees at certain schools are meant for people borrowing money.

Like scraping by paycheck and to paycheck and eating at Ruth Christs every night. Ridiculous

Why is everyone so harsh? What is wrong with being a teacher and wanting to make money doing it? Why LOL at her? Teachers teach our children. We should be investing in our teachers, not frowning upon them, especially those in elementary school where kids are learning to read and write and learn basic math.

She'll get a better job at some point but she made a mistake that's all too common. She thought that getting a master's/phD would substitute for time on the job, which to be fair some college administrators will tell you that lie to get your money. Once she gets 3 to 5 years experience in the classroom then she can get a job writing curriculums

The public school system is anitquated. Aside from teaching the foundation of reading, writing, and math, the public school system does not prepare you for life. It'll never change because it's designed to keep your mindset locked into the "work till I retire and die" mode. They should be teaching you about finance and taxes but we all know why they don't do that.

Some schools have actually moved toward IRL stuff... Even some public schools. Sure they still teach calligraphy, but at least things are trending in the right direction.

That is not the teacher's fault. The teacher is hired to to teach the curriculum they're given by the school board. It's not like the teacher can walk in and say screw the curriculum and just teach whatever they want. I don't disagree other life skills should be taught, but it's wrong to laugh at teachers especially without knowing what exactly they're teaching and who they're teaching. Is she a grade school teacher? Is she teaching kids with disabilities? The school is only part of a child's education. The mindset "work til I retire and die" mostly comes from the home especially those who households barely make ends meet. Nothing wrong with educating yourself to make yourself a better person and a better life for yourself and your family. It's not like this teacher graduated high school and is expecting a handout. If we're not investing in our teachers, then why should anyone be motivated to want to teach? Imagine schools with no teachers.

160k college education to be a teacher is entirely her fault. Otherwise, starting at $37k wouldn't be so bad. Everyone knows teaching does not pay well. Teachers retire making 80k after 40-50 years of teaching. That is the brutal reality.

There is a reason why most teachers are women. It's an easy job and the pay reflects that. BRB summers off, 3 weeks off for Christmas, 1 week off for Thanksgiving, & 1 week for spring break. Men take more risks job wise therefore get paid more. No one forces these people to be teachers.

Thing is her tuition was probably 20k and paid off by grants. The loans went to car payments, hair, nails, clubbing, vacations.

College being an absolute mess has been known for the last decade. Can't believe the financial disasters these people willingly put themselves into.

I completed a WGU degree in 2022 for 10k and make 65k right now 6 months into my new career working at a Fortune 200 after 7 years of making 80-110k with no degree.

I'm sure she didn't even think about the mess that was coming her way until after she graduated.

Have you ever taught before? Grading takes up an enormous amount of time, especially if you want to provide good feedback.

Exactly. Id take that for 2 months off every summer, and about 4 weeks of standard vacation during the 10 months I work, AND they get all the bank holidays as well.... Plus pension, plus health insurance....

again, if you extrapolate their total days per year worked to a normal career, they're doing very well.

Most Batchelder degrees do not cost that much. However, rent , food, entertainment, booze, drugs etc.. all inflate the price of "the education".

Live off credit cards with no income for 4-6 years and how much do you think it would be?

Imagine getting into a career that you have zero idea what the salary range is....

...and these are the people teaching our kids.

This is why I literally have zero sympathy for teachers that complain about pay. Its one thing if you cant find a high paying job in the private sector but if its a government job and you know exactly the range you will be paid over your ENTIRE career, what is there to say? You can push for improved pay but its never going to be a large salary especially when you work nine months a year.
