- 5900x + x570 motherboard + DDR4 (32gb)
- 7900x + a new x670e or b650e motherboard + DDR5 (32gb) is stupid expensive, mostly because of the motherboards.
The problem I'm having here is that the motherboards are so stupidly overpriced yet seem like they're cutting out so much over z690 and x570 boards. It's one thing if you're going to cut down the SATA ports, but then there damn well better be some m.2 slots to compensate for the "new" storage standard. I need SATA for my use case with some HDDs and SSDs, but I'd be fine sacrificing the number of available SATA drives from the old days if it meant I could upgrade to NVME drives since the price inevitably goes down.
Asrock x670 e Pro Rs- $279.99
This is the only x670e motherboard with 6 sata5m.2, and it's not $400+.
MSI b650 Carbon wifi- $329.9 ($319.99 with rebate)
Again, 6 sata, 4 m.2.
What the actualfukk, AMD?
- Intel Raptor lake is around the corner + z690 motherboards that are pretty damn packed for good quality models + support 13th gen and DDR5.
A couple examples:
Asus ROG Strix z670 F Gaming Wifi$339.99
6 SATA, 4 m.2 slots
MSI MPG Z690 CARBON WIFI DDR5 - $369.99
6 SATA,5m.2 slots
Like, bruh. You can get good quality stuff with the Intel boards that by no means are going to be outdated seeing as how nothing even uses PCIE 5.0, including the 3080 ti that I'm planning on keeping for a long while. I'm straight up thinking of selling my AMD parts sitting in the corner since 13th gen is going to be out soon, take the fukkin' loss, and not have to worry about upgrading for several years since I hate going through this PC building/upgrading schite anyways.

I have no interest in any AMD products. It's always a lot more buggy and less optimized by most AAA games. Not really worth saving a few bucks over intel/nvidia.

Just the desktop, not accessories/monitors/ssd.. as for being outdated, there's hardly any games out that even stress the best GPUs out there right now unless you're at a very high resolution. Idk, just a thought. Had to wait over a month for a gpu last year and two weeks now for CPU cooler
Guess it'd be more effective to replace parts whenever they break down I suppose

These days most games coming out on PC are out on PS5 as well so there's really no point for me to have more power than a 3070.

I'd not trust a future simple bios update to fix stuff on first gen am5 for the 8000, 9000, etc. Some AMD boards stopped fully supporting features of 1st gen ryzen towards the end
I bought 12th gen intel with the idea that id eventually get a 13700k or 13900k/ks around the time the 14th gen drops for a big discount, and chose the ddr4 route. CPUs are not making the differences they did in the past unless you specifically need a lot of threads at high frequencies. ddr5 probably has another couple years to convince me that it actually matters. pci-e 5.0 is also brand new and it doesnt really matter right now

Based on what you presented, the intel side is a much better offering for what you need and for your future plans.
Good info.
The DDR4 on 12th/13th gen intel is a big deal. I was originally going to go with DDR5 for the best of the best, but the more I read - the more issues I am seeing about DDR5.
Think I will also probably go the DDR4 route and give the platforms a couple of years to mature.

*It took a long time getting the parts, but by the time I had them some new thing came up that put them on the backburner. Even more stuff piled up recently, injured my arm, so I might as well be happy with the build seeing as how I plan to keep it for a long time.
Credit where it is due, AMD has made great advancements in the CPU space and it's great to have competition, but they absolutely dropped the ball on the platform adoption side of the equation. I'm not even too worried about the jump from DDR4 to DDR5 because I could frankly use faster Ram regardless, but the motherboards were the first blow because of the disparity between previous prices and features. You should not have to drop 2x as much to get a comparable board as the older x570 or Z690 ones.
I can't buy the whole AM5 "future proof" justification when the AM5 boards are so stripped of future expansion availability without jumping into pricing that used to be for high end GPUs, while AMD themselves have a poor history when it comes to software improvements and upgradeability/reliability. Being supported to Zen 5, maybe a refreshmaxdoesn't justify the costs either when I have zero plans on upgrading that soon for just a processor.
Pricing for the CPU itself did me in, though; Intel's highest end is fighting it out with AMD's, but it's priced like the tier lower x7900 that I was originally looking at because - again - stupidly expensive mobos + an over the top x7950 price + DDR5 is all just too much for far less.
I fortunately live close enough to a Micro Center and can get a great price on a 13900k when they get them back in stock alongside a motherboard to get $20 off. All I'll need is a $15 bracket for me 360 cooler.

Shopping around for the motherboards was the nudge to get me looking at Intel, too, because the z690s are just way too competitive against the overwhelming majority of the AM4 offerings.

So once I get my new 4090 + i9-13900k, my 3080 and i9-10900k will go on backup.
I also keep it around as a 2nd PC for LAN parties and whatnot. never know when you'll need one.
since I paid $3500 for the PC and would probably only get like $1000 out of it, why not?

Potato pics, but old and new setup:

this build was a PITA. took like 5 hours to setup and then another 2 hours to troubleshoot why it wouldn't boot. QLED issue 98 and 99. ended up just rebuilding it from scratch essentially.
gotta say I LOOVVEEE the vertical mount GPU. it hides a lot of my poor cable management.
also these Noctua fans are amazing. super silent and temps are great.

benchmarks:
Fire Strike -> 29,120 -> 48,517
Time Spy Extreme -> 7,109 -> 17,924
Port Royal -> 9,487 -> 24,890
Fire Strike Ultra -> 10,824 -> 24,298
seems to be getting roughly double the FPS in all games in 4k 16:9 or 32:9 1080p.
adding the new NVM2 SSD was super great. editing is fast af now

Went to Micro Center and left even more confused on what to go with.
If I go 13900k, they don't have a motherboard I'm feeling (I was leaning towards the MSI MPG Carbon wifi), so I'm losing out on the $20 off.
If I go 7950x, there's this idiotic price gulf between motherboards because of that asinine e/non-e bollocks, so it's looking like theAsus Strix B650e gaming wifiwould be a good model. Really hard to say because, again, the new motherboards are all over the damn place. For example, I'd probably go with theMSI MPG b650 carbonifit was an e variant just for the sake of future proofing - especially in that price range.
I'm also hesitant because AM5 motherboards just get really rocky reviews across the board, and I'm not sure if this is just by virtue of them being new versus the z690 boards which have been out long enough to settle down.
My main hold offs for Intel come down to:
- I'd like to know more how the 13900k fares with Windows 10 because I have no plans on upgrading to 11; not until they fix that godawful mess. I'm not one to mess with settings or cores or whatever the hell I've read about, just set it and forget it. Relying on Windowsanythinglike its scheduler is one reason I've been a bit skeptical about the p-core/e-core thing as well. It's clearly been an effectivestop gatestopgap measure for Intel to push 10nm against AMD, there's no denying that, but I've got a giant, fukk-off monolith of a case for a desktop computer; to quote Jeremy Clarkson, just give mepower.
- I'm still a bit confused on the power scaling versus AMD; it seems the latter handles "eco mode" better. Ironic given the above statement, but electric bills and summer heat, you know?
- Itisa locked in system, so there is zero wiggle room down the line should the idea of upgrading the processor ever possess me.
- Just an observation, but the z790 boards (which I wasn't considering anyway) are either pretty expensive still, orstrangely feature heavily DDR4. Like Micro Center doesn't even have any of the z790 boards with DDR5, which seems kind of odd being the newer platform on a processor that seems to be leaning more into that DDR5 direction. Whatever.
- I wish outlets would go more into the differences in how AM5 vs Raptor Lake fare when it comes to general boot times after memory training. Totally new platforms like AMD's are going to have a lot of reasonable fears but also myths and rumors during the onset that muddy the waters a bit.
- Worth reiterating, but for heaven's sake, AMD, the motherboard situation is stupid. I don't think splitting it intofourvariants was doing anyone favors while also trying to present the platform as being one of longevity, so we wind up with an even more confusing mess of comparing specs between boards because of the extra levels of give and take.
- I need to buy a watercooler bracket (~$15) for Intel, so that factors into the whole motherboard, Intel $20 bundle, pricing.
- AMD doesn't need a bracket, and it's $50 off the motherboard with a bundle.
- Using the above two factors, the z690 MSI carbon would be $369.99 + $15 = $394.99. I could buy a $420 AMD board and it would come out to $370.
*Re-thinking the math now that the coffee's kicked in, it's a bit more freeing to know I could get a $450 AMD motherboard and be $5 off from the Intel one because of the bundle deal. I'll also have to check if it comes with free DDR5 RAM because I could always sell that to get some more money back.

this build was a PITA. took like 5 hours to setup and then another 2 hours to troubleshoot why it wouldn't boot. QLED issue 98 and 99. ended up just rebuilding it from scratch essentially.
gotta say I LOOVVEEE the vertical mount GPU. it hides a lot of my poor cable management.
also these Noctua fans are amazing. super silent and temps are great.

adding the new NVM2 SSD was super great. editing is fast af now
Nice, congrats mate!
How are you like the 13900k? I'm clearly still waffling between that and the 7950x.
Totally new platforms like AMD's are going to have a lot of reasonable fears but also myths and rumors during the onset that muddy the waters a bit.

ugly now but it will be goat when im done building it out
so far im getting some amazing scores. top 50 in all major benchmarks

LOVE the processor. I built the PC right after I got back from Iceland and I had 12,000 photos and about 3 hours of 4k video to edit and this 13900k ate it up like nothing.
this whole system feels like 2-3x what I had with my old 3080 and i9-10900k

Thanks brah I love this combo! It’s weird playing at 4k and having fps higher than my monitor 120 refresh rate
It’s such a beast combo
That G9 price is really good
Do you like the resolution?
They are making a new one but it will be a bish to run
I know there are some 8k ultra wides coming. Not true 8k but it’s basically duel 4k
I think that’s what I’ll target even tho it will be hard to run
But hey, that’s what Dlss quality is for 😎
I highly recommend the 13900k
The reviews measure load under cinebench r23 and then cry about watts
But in actual games the power draw is low and it’s flat out faster than rhe 7950x

Are 4090s still doing the Nvidia thing where they go for sale for 30sec at a time and sell out?
I live near a microcenter so I’ve been checking stock every now and then. Haven’t seen any yet

Scalpers can't even get off of 4080's. They're literally returning them or selling at MSRP.
Edit: Newegg has 4 4080's in stock at normal prices right now. (They've basically been in stock daily since launch.)
Nvidia absolutely fked this all up bc no one wants these things lol. 2 months after 3000 series launched, you weren't getting your hands on on 3080's still.
With the price stack they have going, they've pretty much set themselves up to not sell anything under the 4090 if the 4080 sales are anything to go off of.

i have Hotstock app any 4090 drop must be picked up in under 10 seconds. you must have it in your cart and already proceeded to checkout within 10seconds of the drop. If you manage just to get it into cart within that timeframe it will be removed as you didnt snatch it fast enough
it will show that its still available for a full 30seconds but you will see it's really not there. its unbelievable and doesnt matter the website.
better chance at getting it from microcenter. I was tracking daily but couldnt get any this way and i live between 2 microcenters in a large metro area
I think the best odds are from best buy, mainly because they do local pickups.
so people across the country cant really snatch your allocated drop to your local best buy. Thats how i got my 4090
the 4080 is a different story but rumor mill suggests a price drop is coming in another week or 2
https://www.hardwaretimes.com/nvidia...nch-next-week/
if the 4080 goes to $1k... and there was a $300 gap between it and the 4070ti, does that mean the 4070ti will launch at $699??
that would be a killer card for that price. Its as fast as a 3090ti in 4k and probably faster at 1440p. Would be the go to 1440p card for high refresh at that resolution
