In our school there was the "loser" and there was the "nerd". Both had idiosyncratic behaviors and weirdness to them, but the nerds were accepted on some level because everyone knew they were smart. The losers were just losers and most people didn't even want to talk to them. It really sucked and was awful to watch. Especially because I was one of them lol.
