Lol how anyone with some intelligence would choose to waste his life with a "career" aka making someone else rich is crazy to me.

Good mornin'....
As an old fossil I'll chime in.
Personally, I've never wanted a 'career'.....I only wanted a reasonably well paying job that did require some skill set.
After my (4) year military picnic I achieved that in a couple of different arenas.
A 'career' path is not something I would enjoy as getting rich was never a personal goal.
A 'career' will require lots of extra effort and time that goes far beyond the 8-9 hour daily job for possibly years or decades.
If that rings ones' bell....then go for it.
I never wanted kids so we have none....I much prefer the simple, quiet, less complicated life style.
So...being a long time musician/band member/song writer having just a goodjoballowed me to go home at 5:00 every night and weekends free for gigs or to pursue & excel at thethings that I actually enjoy doing.
"Career or job" approach?....it's a life style choice that probably deserves some serious consideration by everyone at some point in their lives.
Everyone will assess and measure the trade-offs differently.
We have no regrets and the wifster and myself are doing just fine.
But....that' just me....to each their own path.
Back to it.....

At a 9-5 you can coast by, if that's your goal
When you run a business, you have to worry about competition or just being profitable / sustaining in general

Career isn't everything but overall happiness is.
Your career is something you spend 8 hours a day 5 days a week doing + external time to better your skills. The only thing you are doing more is sleeping.
If you don't like your job/career path, there is a high chance your life is going to suck in the 1st world

Imagine if your job gave you a 20% raise this year to keep up with inflation.
Imagine if you could get a job paying $150k/yr in your hometown with a high school diploma and a firm handshake.
On their own, jobs/careers are one of the easiest substitute purposes in life. You spend more time awake doing them than anything else, so why not try and maxx it? And from 1946 to about the 1980s, working hard at jobs really did pay. That's why boomers are so gung-ho about hard work and chit. You put effort in and it was rewarded. If your job really was like those first two lines I wrote, you'd be gung ho about it too. You'd fukking hate rotters for not working too if they were leaving that kind of money on the table.
From 1990 to the present day though, the deck has pretty much been continuously stacked towards your employer. Barrier to entry for jobs has only got higher, pay has been flat for decades, and a lot of jobs have simply been offshored or automated out of existence. Put short, hard work no longer pays. And that's why people have got all cynical about it, and all mercenary. Working harder at most jobs earns you absolutely nothing, and being loyal to your employer earns you absolutely nothing. So people are simply warning the naive not to do those.
I think this is the 3rd time I've quoted this movie clip this week, but Office Space explained the game in 1998. Midbrow websites today will write thinkpieces about "quiet quitting" and "America's mental health over inflation", but Gen X already figured this out 25 years ago.
So if you break down my pay hourly, the first 20 hours pay out at $125/hr, and hours 21-50 pay out at a sub-McDonald's $11/hr. Is it any wonder I take afternoons off to go fukking golfing? Hell no I'm not going to do more than the minimum.

Peter Gibbons : The thing is, Bob, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care.
Bob Porter : Don't... don't care?
Peter Gibbons : It's a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime, so where's the motivation? And here's something else, Bob: I have eight different bosses right now.
Bob Slydell : I beg your pardon?
Peter Gibbons : Eight bosses.
Bob Slydell : Eight?
Peter Gibbons : Eight, Bob. So that means that when I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled, that and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.
And I'm in that same fukking boat! It takes me about 20 hours a week to do the bare minimum at my job to not get fired. Doing that will earn me a $124k base salary + 2% annual bonus. If I get a top performance eval, I get $124k base + 8% annual bonus. I doubt I could get that working less than 50 hours a week.Bob Porter : Don't... don't care?

I guess the argument is if you're missing out on a promotion or a chance to jump ship and careermaxx at another company with a better opportunity. But if you're happy, there's really no need

What prompted this thread... I did a brief interview at a prestigious firm today. Not sure if I'm gonna make it in brahs, but we shall see
If so, may have to do some hard work along the way. The pay looks good from my current position but not sure how it'll compare to the work
Will see if I make it to the next round of interviews

Promotions at this place are based on time in seat up till about year 10, and then they get very, very political afterwards. There is only one promotion track, and everyone wants to find their way up it. But in year 3, I'm not sweating that yet.
Missing a chance to skillmax and jump ship is absolutely a fair point, and one I've been thinking more about as my org hired a sister shadow team in Bangalore, to "provide around the clock debug support." EZ to see where that will end up in a year or two.
All of it honestly feels very Soviet. If I show up and do the bare minimum, I get food on the table and a Khruschkyova to live in. If I go and bust my ass, I get the same thing. In fukkin Cuba, Castro and Che started handing out "good job!" letters to hard workers in lieu of extra pay, and they wondered why everyone was so fukkin lazy.
