*What is the challenge*
The goal is to read 52 books in 52 weeks. 1 book a week is an aggressive, but doable, pace.
*Why is the challenge*
To improve your brain, be entertained, and anything in between. In this digital age, reading improves focus and memory, doesn't screw with your sleep like the blue light from your TV, and if you have a library card, is totally free. Plus, once you have the habit it's a very enjoyable pastime.
*WHO is the challenge*
The challenge is every miscer who wanted to make a better version of himself or herself. Everyone who's in this thread, trying to read a little more and set a personal best on brain power curls.
*What if I don't want to read 52 books, can I still participate in the challenge*
Of course! We all have different goals for physical fitness, the same is true of our mental gains. Read for pleasure, read to learn. Read 1 book or 100, you're welcome in this thread. You should probably push yourself A LITTLE, whether in amount you read or trying out a new subject matter, but do you.

*Are audiobooks reading?*
Different people have different opinions, but if you're asking me: No. Reading is moving your eyes across a page or screen, looking at a graphic image of words. Audiobooks are not the physical act of reading. What most people are ACTUALLY asking is do audiobooks "count". I say yes - you're moving the ideas/story from the author's brain, into yours. That's the end goal of physically reading a book, accomplished by a different means. For what it's worth I avoid non-fiction audiobooks since I personally can't retain as much of the author's ideas and arguments. But I actually PREFER fiction in audio format - if you get a good narrator (Ray Porter, Bronson Pinchot, Scott Brick) the performance really pulls you in.
*The Book brahs thread was started by Invictus. He handed me the reigns in 2020, but respect always to our founder and OG. 'Mirin.
*Check if your local library has "Overdrive" or "Hoopla". Both are free loans of digital books - ebooks or audio, straight to your device. If you have a Kindle, Overdrive will deliver loans straight to it - GOAT way to read a lot for free.
*How can I read a book a week?
The simplest pacing method is to look at the page count of your book and commit to reading 10% a day. For an average 200 page book this is 20 pages a day. This should take 15-20 minutes for an experienced reader. 10% a day is a book every 10 days, or 36.5 books a year. Read a little more on weekends, airplanes or vacation, and you are nearly there. Otherwise, 15% of your book each day kills 54.75 books a year. You can do this.

Well of course no one started a new thread yet as it's not even 2023 yet.
Finished a 3-novel book by Arthur Schnitzler called Desire and Delusion. Bought it to fill out a B2G1 free deal awhile back, and it was recommended. Honestly pretty good overall. He has this stream-of-consciousness way of writing that is a bit of fresh air after reading countless stories where minutiae seems to take up a lot of the page.
So far I've been reading A Clockwork Orange. Kind of a fun book so far, but the jargon can be confusing and makes it a little difficult to follow. I mean you get a general gift of what is happening but it seems to cut my reading speed in half.

#1 To Sleep in a sea of Stars. The 2021 sci-fi novel by the author of the Eragon novels. I actually liked this a lot and the setup for the sequel is even more intriguing.
I started this in 2022 and wrapped up the audiobook today on a 10 hour drive back from family vacation. Also started book #2 for the year and nearly finished it, getting dusty back there yet you pussies?

Finished Carl Jung Synchronicity. What a fascinating book, 5/5 for me even though I'm not sure i buy all its postulates. One of the best attempts I've seen at trying to give an actual framework to so called 'parapsychological phenomena'

Great book with almost too much detail. I spent a lot of time following along on a map to keep my bearings even though I've been to Gettysburg quite a few times.
Then today I wrapped up
I've read a few other books from this author and they are all easy to read, adventure travel type stuff. Always leaves me dreaming of future trips when I'm done.

Finished A Clockwork Orange. Great book, the movie was great but I liked the book as well. The last chapter was omitted from the original American release (and subsequently the Kubrick film) and the last chapter does add a different takeaway from the story.
Currently reading Ahhnolds autobiography Total Recall. Only a couple chapters in. Just finished the part where his mom was worried he was gay lol. No seriously it's a good read so far.

Finished Thucydides - History of the Peloponnesian war
What a book although it was fairly long. Probably not to everyone taste but reading a first hand account in such detail of such a long and brutal war that occurred over 2400 years ago was humbling in many ways. Thucydides writing is pretty damn modern considering the age of the text, he is quite meticulous with his sources (compared to herodotus anyway), attempts to explain things without reference to the Gods the way Herodotus does, and he has a keen political insight. His description of the city states and civil unrest and political manoeuvrings was quite Machiavellian despite being written 1900 years before the Prince. 5/5
Also nearly done with Stephen fry heroes (will be done tomorrow), and just started Albert Camus - the fall

Finished 1, the final book of a Greek trilogy called Thessaly. 1st two books were great, 3rd took a nose dive so I shelved it for probably four months. Anxious to get into something decent now.

In! And completed 2022 goal of 36 (I did 52 one year and that was enough). 36 again this year…
And I’m starting with The Brothers Karamazov so RIP.
Funny because wife and I each recommended a book to each other to start the year out, and I’m pretty sure she just googled best books ever and picked one that sounded interesting. Also funny because it’s pretty much the only major Russian classic by Tolstoy or Dostoyevsky I still haven’t read. And funny because at the same time I picked it up, a bunch of smoothbrains went viral for bashing Lex Fridman for having it on his list.
Anyway, reps all around every time I’m ITT as usual, ya book-readin nerds.

Stephen fry - heroes: 5/5. Stephen fry's mythos books are just excellent, he has an amazing way of repackaging the greek myths for a modern audiences
Euripides - Medea, Hecabe, Electra & Heracles - 3/5 - these were enjoyable and each one was fairly short (all 4 were around 200 pages), and gave a bit more insight into greek mythology. Given it's age it was good and very easy to read but i enjoy the likes of Aristophanes more than Euripides.

Daniel dennet - from bacteria to bach and back
Xenophon - Memorabilia (conversations of socrates)

Incredible book, easy to read and the topics were right up my alley (some of them really hit home). Everyone in the modern world should read this book Gives great insight into why we are the way we are, why people in the most developed societies are so depressed.
he touches on alcoholism, screen time addiction, fasting, exercise, exercise injuries, cold exposure... so many things I've been experimenting with, then you read it and see some fact and reasoning behind what I was discovering on my own.
Brilliant book, highly recommend everyone check it out.

Currently reading 'Why Zebras don't get ulcers' by Robert Zapolski and 'The nutrition Pyramids' by Eric Helms and Andy McDonald.
Also just started 'the madness of crowds' by Douglas Murray as my first audio book.
