How much do they get paid? According to Google average is like 90-120k range. A solid income, but not way massive.

If I were just starting out I would get the CISSP cert or even the CCSP.

Its not unrealistic to start at $50/hr with either of those.

The money is in open contracts. You try to find exploits and send them to the company to fix. The downside is the other people can also do them. So you might spend 10 hours working on it then all of a sudden the contract is closed since someone else finished first.

Is it that common to be able to just get a "couple of certs", have no degree, not have actual work experience in the field and...just be able to walk into a job like that?

I have serious doubts, boyo. I certainly could be wrong though, but if that were the case I'd imagine the field would already be saturated by now.

My stylist's current bf was a painter, took about 18 months worth of certs, and is now pulling down $75k as a cyber security dude. And for real, companies like mine are constantly getting attempted hacks so these IT tradies actually have some use. I'd much rather pay a couple hundred grand for a team of cyber tradies than have to explain to my Board why my company got hacked and try to recover from that.

$400k seems like a huge stretch unless you're some genius in IT. Realistically, you could hit 120-150k/yr pretty fast. If you're really good, you can also have a side hustle of doing bug bounties.

Takes a lot to be in good cybersecurity because there is so much you have to understand. Plus a lot of the work is on blue side, which is boring.

Realistically, you could get a few certs and start as a security analyst, then work your way up accordingly. No need for degree or help desk job.

What company do you run that it's getting attacks?

The only attempts to hacks I know of are my fookn BOA debit card. Chits always getting hax. srs.

For real, my stylist bf did just what I said. He's not making $100k but he's doing ok for a former painter, particularly to start.

And any company that uses or has tremendous amounts of data gets hacking attempts constantly. Most are stupid attempts like getting some derp to email their password, but big companies have more derps working for them than you can imagine.

They get paid good but there are better. DevSecOps and Data Engineers get paid more. Cloud Engineers also make bank if you know all 3 major cloud providers and a little bit of OCI. It's all about leveraging your skills.

In the end, the software engineers will always be the rock stars. They make 200k and up. It's rare but some make 500k up to 1 million. Another way to make bank is to go into IT management. It's stressful AF but I've seen job postings for 1 million salary. LOL

Yeah my work pays cyber guys for the SOC about 90k, and they keep leaving once they get experience to make more.

you won’t get hired without a degree or work experience. You will have to work as help desk type chit and work your way up. Look into getting comptia security+ certificate.

cybersecurity is also a huge field, you could do IT auditing as well which is entry level.

Don't listen to this guy. A cert, any cert without experience is worthless. I have guys with all kinds of fancy certs getting me red bulls from 711.

I recommend you get your A+ and Network+ and apply for help desk jobs. The hardest part is getting that first IT job.
