Did low-carb/keto/psmf when cutting for years, not worth it imo. Just too much other side effect issues go on. Ultimately, what is going to get you a bodyfat is CICO and energy expenditure. Doing low carb/keto/psmf will just end up drying you out, appearing leaner and weigh less technically but still at the same bodyfat percentage.

It's really sad to watch.if you are already fat/insulin resistant and reduce your calories to 1k over a period of time, and most of those calories come from carbs/processed added sugary foods. your body will just burn muscle and crash it's metabolism to compensate for the deficit. it cannot access fat to make up the energy difference because insulin is high which doesn't allow fat to be accessed for energy.
you'll end up skinny fat.
yes you lose weight but you will not get lean.
maybe once all LBM is gone, you will start to lose some fat at a slower pace until you are just bone.
fasting though on 0 calories is completely different and doesn't damage your metabolism. it actually jacks up GH to protect your LBM, and you lost mostly fat. it's also the fastest way to fix your insulin levels ~3 weeks to get them back to normal levels depending on the damage.

Obviously she's probably older than my mom, but I keep having to tell my mother "YOU HAVE TO START EXERCISING".
Like really exercising, as in challenging yourself.
My mom thinks like say walking for 30 minutes is enough.
That's hardly even "exercise".
Everyone as they get older need some cardio, some resistance and some stretching.
Not one or the other.
Not saying she needs to go run a marathon but she needs to exert herself more so than she does.
I don't know your mother's actual situation like how possible being that active is for here but it's very necessary to fight things you're mentioning (muscle wasting, bone loss etc).
I'm sure you know all that though but (at least in my case) "you can lead a horse to water...

Our body uses carbs for energy when it needs energy quickly.
When we do longer, less intense work, our bodies will start burning the fat for energy to save the carbs in case an emergency situation arises and you need the quick energy again.
This can be advantageous for survival purposes.
At least that is what I have read a long time ago. I applied it in my life and it seemed very effective. I am aware other people have had similar results.

I drink 1.5 cups of red wine the night before a show and manage my salt and water starting about 3 days out, and again the morning of a show.
Believe it or not bro, some guys actually read, learn and work hard to get where they want to be, and not just take short cuts.
Just because you can't stick to a plan doesn't mean I can't.

I date my calendar, and in my head, to step on stage 1 week before the actual show date. I plan my cut at 1 lb per week and date this 1 week prior as well. You hear a lot of people backstage, and even some coaches, saying "you're just holding water"...nope, sorry, you're just higher BF% than you think and you're not prepped.
If you have to rely too much on peak week tricks and tactics, you're behind schedule.

I recall reading that low carb for weight loss works for around 60% of people. For the other 40% something else is going on i'm guessing.

I have, however, placed higher than guys much younger, half my age etc.. I've won 40+ categories while I was 50+ a couple times, which I was pretty stoked about. And I've won opens (any age) when I was in my late 40's; very pleased about that as well.

Interesting thread. I’ve always seen best results with the broscience eating every 2.5-3 hours, but that also came with always being hungry af (due to calorie deficit lol). I think different peoples bodies respond to different protocols but in the end it always ends up being about calories not carbohydrates IMO
