There are a few parallels.

The majority of US troops left both countries years prior, the final evacuations marked the end of the war. Time will tell with Afghanistan but hopefully they find the relative peace that Vietnam has.

Vietnam did have a major conflict with China for one month in 1979 that resulted in 50,000+ killed. There were continued small battles until 1991.

At the time, Vietnam was considered the worst foreign policy defeat. But nowadays, it looks like a typical end result for USA foreign policy. We haven't won a war outright since World War II (Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan)

we won persian gulf war outright and the 2003 invasion we destroyed the army, put in our puppet state government, and still have troops and state department on the ground there. not a loss at all. definitely not a war that totally went our way, but we won by every strategic merit

It's hard to say what Afghanistan would look like today without all the meddling by Britain, the Soviets and the US but they seemed to be doing alright until the late 1970's.
