It was able to infect humans because it was modified in the lab and then escaped.

Just lol if anyone things it evolved naturally with HIV spike proteins.

On this quote in the serial passaging section:

“In theory, it is possible that SARS-CoV-2 acquired RBD mutations (Fig. 1a) during adaptation to passage in cell culture, as has been observed in studies of SARS-CoV11.”

He goes on to say:

"The finding of SARS-CoV-like coronaviruses from pangolins with nearly identical RBDs, however, provides a much stronger and more parsimonious explanation of how SARS-CoV-2 acquired these via recombination or mutation19.

The acquisition of both the polybasic cleavage site and predicted O-linked glycans also argues against culture-based scenarios."

Let's not forget how Kristian Andersen called anyone a conspiracy theorist if they believed in lab leak on twitter. How many times did he delete his twitter account the past 3 years? Dude spent the last 3 years calling anyone a conspiracy theorist. Get the fuсk outta here.

And don't forget Francis Collins:

In the pangolin text you quoted they are saying it is possible but unlikely. They then go on to explain their reasoning. You also didn’t acknowledge the other passages which are unambiguous. The authors state, verbatim “cannot disprove…”. and then restate it again a bit later.

The other paragraphs on the cleavage site and glycans are again perfectly consistent with his email. It is saying a natural origin is the best (simplest) explanation, but in theory, those features are explainable through a LL hypothesis, specifically “culture-based” scenarios. He is doing exactly what a good scientist should be doing!

And as cited, subsequent work since proximal origin was published has shown clear signatures of natural recombination.

For someone so deeply interested in this subject, you should watch the entire hearing. In nearly every instance Andersen is given to respond to an accusation or answer a question, he knocks it out of the park.
"Seen in the light of evolution, biology is, perhaps, intellectually the most satisfying and inspiring science. Without that light it becomes a pile of sundry facts -- some of them interesting or curious but making no meaningful picture as a whole."

Again, second paragraph in, heexplicitly shuts down any lab scenarios.

It's not published by the NIH. That's the archive/database.

So just to be clear (pun intended), your explanation is that the authors forgot what they wrote on three other occasions in the same paper. Because that’s the implication of your interpretation.
“Clearly shows” is obviously meant to be ~ probable or highly probable.

Your entire argument hinges on what is at most a poor use of words.

Maybe they should word their paper better next time.

And while they're at it, maybe not go on twitter and publicly call everyone a conspiracy theorist while they are saying otherwise behinds closed doors.

Ya think?

It’s a paper that in detail explains why your claim is not scientifically supported.

I can't believe there are people still doubling down on it not being a lab leak of a virus modified by humans.

It's now so obvious that this is what happened, and history will be SO HARSH on the negligent scientists who created and leaked it, politicians and journalists that tried to cover it up.

A future equivalent of HBO's Chernobyl series called Wuhan will have all our children or grandchildren asking us whether we fell for (or supported) the cover up for the criminals who killed millions of people, and so many people are going to have to do some awkward lying.

Let's not forget about the Chinese whistleblower that everyone conveniently forgot about and that our own government said they thought it was from the Chinese lab.

That is, until Fauci took over and tried to cover his ass and told everyone to cover up it's origins.

It's not too hard to not be a liar if you put some effort into it.
The conspiracy name calling was addressed in the hearing.

At this point I’m not even sure what your argument is. Those big mean scientists say something on Twitter that upset you? The same scientists who are getting ****ing death threats from conspiracy lunatics. Reality is you should be thankful these world class researchers spent countless hours evaluating origin hypotheses.

I just find it hard to be thankful for scientists who shutdown any real discussion of lab leak theory. Scientists that went into a WHO investigation and pussy-footed around, letting the Chinese shut them down and show them absolutely nothing.

Don't forget the Lancet paper from Peter Daszak. Wasn't he the point man on the WHO investigation, as well?

They were the most open minded about it all. Started with a hypothesis they believed most likely, and changed their minds with evidence. True to the scientific method. Show some appreciation.

Oh, look at this from yesterday. Because scientists didn't have the balls and were too concerned about politics to properly confront China three years ago. Show some appreciation. Lmao.

The Biden administration formally halted the Wuhan Institute of Virology’s access to US funding, citing unanswered safety and security questions for the facility at the center of the Covid lab leak theory.

The Department of Health and Human Services notified the institute about the suspension on Monday and told the lab it’s seeking to cut it off permanently, according to a memo obtained by Bloomberg News. An HHS review that started in September raised concern that the facility based in Wuhan, where Covid first emerged, is violating biosafety protocols and isn’t complying with US regulations.

The penalties are the most drastic action the US has taken over the lab’s failure to share information amid ongoing investigations into Covid’s origins. They come as leaders in the US and China are trying to establish a better working relationship between the two countries as both continue to deal with the economic fallout of the pandemic that killed 7 million people.
