Games take way too long to come out now.
Remember when GTA3 came out in 2001, and then vice city a year later, and san andreas just 2 years after that.
How about when Ocarina of time came out and Majoras mask just 2 years later
Baldurs gate 2 was 2 years after baldurs gate 1, oh and in between the same team released planescape torment the game with the greatest story in gaming, just because they felt like it.
Why do we have to wait 8 years for elden ring 2?
Why does GTA come out once every 20 yeas now?
Good luck seeing baldurs gate 4 before 2030.
What is going on? And don't give me "games are more advanced now". These studios have teams of 100s now, it's not 8 guys in a room anymore.
Remember the old days when E3 would come and they'd be like "here's a new gta it's coming out in a few months"
Now it's "here's a trailer for a game in preproduction we don't even have a clue about a release date but it might be before your unborn child's 18th birthday"
The industry ****ing sucks

Are you saying there's a conspiracy where all game companies agreed to delay all their big releases? I would believe your "lazy" argument if there was just one studio that pushes out amazing AAA sequels every 2 years....but there isn't a single one.
The truth is that games are just far more advanced now.
I don't believe companies are paying hundreds of employees to sit on their asses and do absolutely nothing. Nowadays games have a ton of voice acting, a ton of motion capture, far more detailed assets, far more extensive storylines. Also much more quests, events, interactions etc. It's basically a game on top of a movie and think about how long movies take to make.

I predict AI will soon make it so "easy" to develop games that it will take much shorter times in the near future to develop games.
Hell it may become so good any misc autist can make a game soon enough.
But let's be real good old games to play anyway, I don't mind. And especially this year is unreal, llllooooooooonnnnggggg time ago it's been this good

It honestly wouldn't be a problem if the games that did come out had plenty of soul and were consistently great.
So many AAA games feel copy and pasted with micro transactions. If that weren't the case, long development cycles wouldn't seem like a big deal.
That said, I feel that as long as you sprinkle in indie and AA games into your library, you'll be just fine.

This year in AAA we also had RE4 Remake, Dead Space, Hogwarts Legacy, Burning Shores, Jedi Survivor, Street Fighter 6, Final Fantasy 16, Baldur's Gate 3, Armored Core 6, Starfield, Spiderman 2.

Honestly that's a good thing. Can't be having 10 games out back to back. If you have a social life then it's no problems for good games to come every 3 years.

What are you even talking about? FIFA/NBA/shooty shooty boom boom game/whatever have annual installments.
It's like asking why it takes x hours to build a new car when Henry Ford managed to pump out a new Model T every 90 minutes.

Games are almost always released too ****ing early and full of ****ing bugs.
I'd rather games take 2 years longer than they already do and actually come out polished and ready to go. Stop being in impatient and realize that people like you are literally one of the primary reasons the gaming industry sucks. Can't wait until a game is fully cooked 'cause you got a bunch of kids going "Wherez muh game!?"
The size and scope of the games change, they take more time to make, and are more expensive. You got voice acting and motion capture now. Worlds that are crazy huge and full of detail. Hundreds of npcs etc etc. **** takes time and they already rush **** out too fast.

Thats the price of more complex, better looking games.
I think there's room for what Spiderman did. Spider man 2018, a smaller spinoff game in 2020, and then true sequel in 2023.
Cause at this point I dont even get excited when games are announced cause for all I know I wont be alive by the time it comes out. thats how long it takes.

a lot of those games with yearly releases are just the same game (same engine) on a new map or in the case of sports games, updated rosters..
as for the time frame of GTA 5 to GTA 6 that was purely rockstar just milking their cash cow of GTA online.
look how many assassin creed's you have now, how many CODs you have now. yearly reskinned releases, they might sell, but everyone after paying their yearly $70 will agree they got duped and game is garbage.
but 2023 has been great for gamers. so many great fukin games released this year. its amazing.

'Games are more advanced now' does that apply though? Back then, the hardware making the games was painfully slow, so what looks like chit tier graphics by todays standards were cutting edge at the time.
The CGI scenes in Terminator 2 literally took months just for a few seconds of video. Something like Star Fox on the SNES could'nt have been an easy feat.

Also as I said the teams making these games now are massive by comparrison.
You have two extremes, assassin's creed **** coming out every year and just being ****, or the actual good games coming out once every 10 years because they are either lazy or milking the previous release for all it's worth.
Theres room for a middle ground here, there's no reason GTA, Elder scrolls etc can't be released more like every 5 years, that is reasonable.
