And in fact this rule makes the most sense for brokies. This is because for a low income earner, there are plenty of opportunities to move up. The “marginal returns” to any additional effort spent increasing your income (e.g. applying for better paid jobs) instead of mowing your lawn, is extremely high.
By contrast if you’ve made it to the c-suite already, the opportunities to move up can sometimes be few and far between.

for most people pursuing opportunities takes thinking and strategic planning...and their will be down time between the idea/planning and doing the steps needed to put it into action. for example if hourly at home depot decides they like to move up to a manager...it's not like the steps needed to do that within the next 6 months would keep them from cutting grass.

Are you just talking about oil changes on cars? Most shop charge $125 an hour labor rate. So a person can still buy their own tools and be ahead.
Friday night. Date night in Miami. Every night is a date night in Miami, and everyone's having sex. But for me, sex never enters into it. I don't understand sex. Not that I have anything against women, and I certainly have an appropriate sensibility about men, but when it comes to the actual act of sex, it's always just seemed so undignified. But I have to play the game.

The question is not whether you can do the job cheaper
The question is whether you can earn more per hour doingwhatever it is you’re good atthan the guy changing your oil; and therefore whether it makes sense for you to go and earn that money, pay they guy to work in your car for an hour, and pocket the surplus.

They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human being to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in “advanced” countries. The industrial-technological system may survive or it may break down. If it survives, it MAY eventually achieve a low level of physical and psychological suffering, but only after passing through a long and very painful period of adjustment and only at the cost of permanently reducing human beings and many other living organisms to engineered products and mere cogs in the social machine. Furthermore, if the system survives, the consequences will be inevitable: There is no way of reforming or modifying the system so as to prevent it from depriving people of dignity and autonomy. If the system breaks down the consequences will still be very painful. But the bigger the system grows the more disastrous the results of its breakdown will be, so if it is to break down it had best break down sooner rather than later. We therefore advocate a revolution against the industrial system. This revolution may or may not make use of violence; it may be sudden or it may be a relatively gradual process spanning a few decades. We can’t predict any of that. But we do outline in a very general way the measures that those who hate the industrial system should take in order to prepare the way for a revolution against that form of society. This is not to be a POLITICAL revolution. Its object will be to overthrow not governments but the economic and technological basis of the present society. In this article we give attention to only some of the negative developments that have grown out of the industrial-technological system. Other such developments we mention only briefly or ignore altogether. This does not mean that we regard these other developments as unimportant. For practical reasons we have to confine our discussion to areas that have received insufficient public attention or in which we have something new to say. For example, since there are well-developed environmental and wilderness movements, we have written very little about environmental degradation or the destruction of wild nature, even though we consider these to be highly important.Aka “specialisation”

Sure there’s a budget constraint
I get that
But if they start small - say, hire a sitter for an hour to look after their kids
And use that time productively to work on their resume, apply for jobs
Once they have a higher rate of pay, they have got the ball rolling - from there they can hire a sitter more frequently, do overtime, start studying for a better qualification

The markup on restaurants is insane. It's at least 5 or 6x more expensive to eat out

The act of cooking & cleaning is pleasurable though. You get instant gratification pretty much.
Cooking a meal vs buying a meal
One is stress relieving, you get to be creative, you get the satisfaction of having done it, you've saved money, you've provided for others and you've given them something that they can't just go out and buy = special. When people are cooked for they feel cared about. Even if it tastes worse than something from a restaurant it's still more special. Gordon Ramsay puts his mother's cooking as the best in the world and I'm sure he means it.
The other is pretty much mass produced slop, delivered by a surly delivery driver who might have stuck a hand in it and stolen some, that's overpriced and from a kitchen which may or may not be very hygienic. No house filled with nice smells. No bonding. Just eating slop while checking on bitcoin price fluctuations or something because you're a CEO who can't take a break because someone on Instagram (who is secretly miserable) told you not to or something. Head filled with slogans about being on the grind. Belly filled with slop and min wage kitchen porter saliva. Why even bother. May as well kill yourself now if that's the pinnacle of life.

This is about spending time doing pointless chores to “save money” when in reality you are costing yourself far more valuable opportunities.

What a stupid thread. Life is way too short to be so obsessed with making money 24/7. If you enjoy cutting the grass and mopping the floor, who cares. None of this even matters in 40-60 years when you're dead. American culture towards working and making money is so ass backwards and retarded. (Super Ded fkn Srs)

1) study
2) apply for more jobs, update my resume
3) pursue further education/part time education
4) put in extra hours at work with the goal of getting promoted earlier
5) networking... I.e. Getting drinks with coworkers etc
6) research your career, consume content on what direction to take... I.e. Visa planning, visiting forums for your career, discussions about advancements in your car
A lot of these do not give immediate benefits but the return is there.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone in this situation.
And when you do work on your car or house, you are basically paying yourself. And if it's your house you are also investing.
There also comes a point in your career where learning more, the ROI curve flattens unfortunately. I don't need to learn anymore programming languages or more about math or finance, it's basically a waste of my time IMO unless you are doing it for enrichment.

And in any case, that doesn’t prevent you from taking all the capital you have accumulated from your years of labour and investing it into your next big venture.
