Q: What's crazier than a shop charing $500/hr for spark plug replacement?

A: the NPC's who gladly pay it because "I have a good-paying job."

LMAO.

You don't even need a Saturday on an inline-4... Literally you can do it while finishing your morning coffee.

Same for oil changes. I buy enough oil for 3-4 changes that cost the same as one change at a shop. That doesn't include the price for the filters they try to rip you off by doubling the price that you can get them at autozone or amazon. I also lol at people who pay hundreds of dollars for new brake pads. (Super Ded fkn Srs)

The thing is, almost no one is making $500/hr.... and when it comes to spark plugs, shops are LITERALLY charging that much. It's wild. You don't need special tools, you don't need a jack, you don't need fluids, no electrical knowledge.... It's literally 1 hex bolt you take off, take out old plug, put in new, and put back on.

$500/hr = $960k/year....

So if you are making north of a million dollars a year, yes you should pay someone.

What if it snaps?

Then its a more invasive task

Again your forgetting that this reality really has NPC’s who can spawn money

Its 100% true

People txt me the word “yep” instead of yes or yeah or they use !!! To really get the point across in a txt it’s completely irrelevant action to a normal person

I'd say >90% men under 40 barely know what an engine is, let alone a spark plug, let alone diagnosing a simple engine issue.

I agree with OP, it's lame

Listen I do almost all my own work on cars but spark plugs can be a pain in the azz. On a lot of v8s you have to remove a lot of the air box ducting to even get to them and those back plugs can be an absolute bitch. I'd rather have to jack the truck up 4 times to do brake pads than have to change spark plugs. Sure the work is a little harder physically but chit can turn into a literal nightmare if a plug breaks. A brake job can go tits up but the worst that can happen is a fukd caliper which really isn't hard or expensive to fix, especially if you've already got the original one off. I live in a no rust area so it's probably different story for rustbelt guys.

To address the original OP, it's not that I can't pay to have this stuff fixed it's that I don't trust quick lube places to touch my car and the mechanics that I do trust keep disappearing. Independent tradies can vanish like a fart in the wind for a hundred different reasons. The guys that work at quick lube places don't know chit. They're either teenagers or felons with no prior experience. Saying all that if they're charging $500 per hour I'll spend my whole weekend doing brake and plug jobs for $300 an hour lol

The people paying just use the "That's why I work so I don't have to do that stuff" line are copers. They would like to be able to do it but their dad failed them. I get it since my dad failed me in that area too but I went out and learned it myself.

To be fair, there are some engines where accessing the plugs is a complete nightmare.

And sometimes even simple jobs spiral out of control. I just did plugs on my Viper. You have direct access to all 10 plugs easy peasy, 15 minutes. Except 2 of the plug boot terminals broke off when removing them. And then I had to wait 2 weeks for replacement wires. And then I had to drain/open the fuel system because the regulator blocked access to the distributor for the wires to attach to.

And god forbid the plug snaps off in the block and there's limited access, or the threads strip out because some engineer decided that 3-4 threads was enough to hold a spark plug in.

I remember seeing a study back in like 2005 that showed 50% of men couldn't even change a tire lol. It's probably 80% now.

I know plenty of grown men who dont even know what to do when they turn the key and the car doesn't start. Just a blank stare.

The issue lies between whether it’s a 4 cylinder or v6

If it’s a v6 then it becomes a lot harder

On a 4banger it would take less than 15 minutes to change out. V6 that 15 minute becomes a 5 hour job

It doesn't help that engineers have managed to make changing spark plugs way more difficult than it needs to be. I'm a Ford guy but come on Ford you can't make a spark plug stay in a head so after they shoot out on their own you design a spark plug that breaks off and stays in the head. Ford has only been making internal combustion engines for 100+ years......ph4ggots.

I've changed hundreds of spark plugs and not one has ever broken off. Obviously, if you don't know what you are doing, use the wrong tools and rush the job it may happen, but doing a little research beforehand and taking your time is all that's needed, that's it. A gorilla could do it.

It's easy. Drive a Ford lol

But seriously if they were overtightened by someone changing them before it can happen. Low risk but still

As mentioned earlier itt.

If it’s a 4 cylinder Honda/toyota, I can swap them in like 15 minutes.

Takes a bit longer on my 8 cylinder Lexus. Have to remove air intake, battery, trim, some brackets, etc.

Need to have various extensions and wobble joints to get it done, but still worth it to me since I’m poor.

That's the whole point of my thread.... Things aren't worth your time if you can make more doing something else.... BUT NO ONE IS MAKING $960k LMFAO (that would be $960k after tax, too!). Unless you're the PFIZER CEO, you aren't making that.

The example I saw is for a 4 cylinder HYUNDAI.... dead fukin srs. That isn't exotic or special.... Like at ALL.

I would do it myself, but there are a few Miscers here who claim it's a "waste of your time" and you should be using the time to "make money"

But they are probably Uber drivers who have an app on their phone and when they want to work they just press a button.

Just do it yourself

To be fair, a lot of dudes who believe they can work on their own vehicles, have absolutely zero business picking up a wrench. Butchery will likely be performed by the youtube university hacks.

Take an automotive course or two, otherwise you may hurt yourself.

Spark plugs are simple, until they're not.

Crew. I’m YouTube Certified basically, but I still go after almost anything.
