It's a bit different, but it reminds me of the whole China & Taiwan situation where China says Taiwan is a part of China and not to acknowledge them as an independant country.

I've met quite a lot of Ukrainian women who fled the country and even dated one briefly. They all seem to identify as Ukrainian specifically and do not want to be part of Russia.

Same as I have Taiwanese friends (some of whom are still living in Taiwan) who want to keep their independence/existence as a country and absolutely do not want to get swallowed up by the CCP.

You have it spot on. In most cases the good and bad is kind of a muddled mess.

For the most part you can get an idea based on the tactics chosen and the effective ROIs.

For Putin specifically. You don't become LT Colonel of a KGB intelligence branch and stay a "good guy". However, that doesn't invalidate every action he is taking.

The West is breaking their word with Nato expansion. At the same time if we don't we are kind of breaking our word given during nuclear disarmament. Pretty sure most of the broken away states strongly regret that deal.

Ukraine has always had issues with their own identity.

During WW2 they couldn't figure out if they were Nazis or Russians. To this day, their greatest national hero is a literal nazi responsible for the genocide of 100,000 poles, jews and suicide bombing of allied soldiers during WW2. Look him up, he's even identified as a nazi terrorist by the US gov. There is no man greater in the Ukraine, to this day.

These days, pre-Maidan, Ukrainians comfortably spoke Russian and loved living under their sphere of influence. So much that a third of the country call themselves Russians.

They had every opportunity on the planet to separate themselves from Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union and instead they chose not to. Now suddenly, people with no knowledge of history in that part of the world, think Ukrainians out of nowhere decided they're a sovereign peoples!!!

They could have followed Poland but they chose not to - by the way Polish people literally despise Ukrainians as much/if not more than Russians.

It's part of a very large hypocrisy most people ascribe to. They create a moral dichotomy in their head that all the world must abide by, but in their own lives ascribe to moral relativism. Their lives exist in this pseudo utilitarian/moral relativist state and they can't see through it. We can take a step back, really dive into all the key evidences of the a particular conflict, but ultimately just come up with whom is more right

The great irony is most people's worldview would lead them to believe both are wrong for even engaging in war while also saying both sides have their own set of morals that allow them to live/die as they see fit

It's just a huge coincidence that Ukraine seemed fine being Russia light after the USSR collapsed and it wasn't until a western backed coup that Ukraine decided it didn't like it's Russian heritage anymore.

I'm originally from Ukraine. My brethren have no idea what's going on because they trust the news more than paying attention to what is actually happening. When you study history and understand sociology, you get a better grasp of how the real world actually works vs how you think it works. It takes years to observe to the point where you get a true feel for reality.

It's not something you can explain unless you study every angle and go back further in history to see how, what and why. I will say this, neither Ukraine nor Russia is completely at fault. There's much more than that. Russia doesn't want NATO (and the EU) and her forces to occupy Ukraine just like the western world doesn't want China to occupy Taiwan and get a better view and grasp of western control. I wish there was a simpler way to explain it, but I'd have to write a book about how it all connects, including biblical history.

History is complex by itself and when you talk about world superpowers that is an even more difficult puzzle to fully understand. I do have my own views, but they are incomplete. It's nearly impossible to know exactly what is going on unless you are at the top government position and sitting during table talks and are told the full story about what needs to be done, etc. No regular civilian will know the details, but those who actually decide who goes to war.

I don't pick sides in wars, because even if someone attacks first, it doesn't mean there isn't bad juju there between the countries that has been going on for decades or even hundreds of years. It's easy to point fingers when you ignore the nuances of war and countries' domestic and international disputes. Anyone who has ever played an RTS game or tactical RPG like Tactics Ogre will see that the answers are never that simple. Well, the real world is even more complex than some video game.

I have a rather limited vocabulary. When I was growing up I didn't read enough books, so I'm not very good at expressing myself through writing. I know precisely what I mean when I write something, but I'm not efficient at explaining it. Subtlety gets lost when you don't write the exact words to describe something. I could use the argument that English is my 3rd language, but that would be a cop out, lol.
