No one goes to BUDs thinking they can't make it through and 70% of them wash out. I would imagine it is mostly mental and having a plan B would make it nearly impossible to make it through. Think if your dad owned a gas station and you went to BUDs. You would likely at one time during training let yourself think....."I can just go work at my dads Exxon station". Then it is over and you are ringing the bell.

The physical part would probably be torturous, but man, I can't imagine the miserableness of being uncomfortable with the cold wet and sand on top of the lack of sleep. I would talk a good game but when they told me to get sandy and jump into the freezing water for the 27th time I can imagine one of those times being like "I can't".

Absolutely not. I'm not cut out for military service. I'm extremely self centered and driven by personal desires. Not exactly a kosher behavior/mindset for the military.


If I'd have had a chance for seizing land/property/valuables/looting in war/while on foreign soil I'd think differently. But warfare in the modern age is all service and sacrifice. In previous generations you had an opportunity to build wealth/grow rich/do a little looting for personal enrichment.



Support the troops. Just don't want to be a troop.

I actually trained to pass the entry test inmy late 20's/early 30'smy late 20's/early 30'smid to late 20s. And I could do all of it no problem. Yes, sub 6 minute miles (in running shoes and I also ran in combat boots...forget times....I am pulling this out of memory), 500 yard breast stroke lap swim sub 8 min, pull ups are easy. Push ups.....wait, I don't even have to go to full protraction and just do what I consider half reps and it counts lol

I use to do a lot of running (at least 5 miles most days) and lap swimming at speed (3k yard breaststroke most days, usually 5k), not lackadaisical crap.

Beyond just passing the entry test, I dunno. That's a whole other thing. And I am talking about back then. I don't run or swim anymore and it would take a lot to get back to being capable like that again. I still pull up like a mofo though, even better than back then.

I went to jump school with SEALs and participated in joint operations in Central America with them. They definitely have a different attitude/swagger about them. But it’s the SE part of SEAL that truly sets them apart.

Agreed.

When I was in (during the Holocene Epoch) I was pretty ignorant of military MOSs' that one could opt for.
I don't think I would have chosen SEALS even if I was more aware of the MOS.
I was OK with joining a branch of the Navy and striving to perform honorably among those I served with.

"Jump school"....you out did me amigo.
I've never jumped out of a perfectly running aircraft.
Only jumped out of UH34s/CH46s from about 6'.

I was gonna go airborne but broke my ankle in basic. I had a buddy who arrived at the airborne school, first thing out the bus was a 2 mile run. He failed, before he could stop running he was told to run back in the bus. And that was the end of his airborne career.

I went to jump school right after Infantry School graduation. Most of my infantry class was going airborne, so there were at least 100 of us, a small class of SEALs (20 or so), one Marine Force Recon dude, and then a smattering of other Army MOS’s.

All of the washouts I remember were from the non infantry Army MOS’s, and one SEAL ensign broke his femur on day two of jump week.

The Force Recon Marine ended up being the Airborne class honor graduate.
