I actually had to work super hard to get a job at a big tech company.

I started off as a receptionist at the company I wanted to work for in the summer and asked the Executive admins to give me extra work so I could gain experience.

Then I got a part-time job as a admin while I went to school to learn more.

Then I got a summer internship in my major.

That manager hired me after I graduated from college. I've worked in tech for 30 years.

Meanwhile people from my university on LinkedIn write me all of the time with just a degree and expect a job to fall into their lap? WTF LOL.

Now I acknowledge that I had to compete with people like BBMG who went to Ivy League schools. I did not. So that meant I had to work harder as pretty much every summer intern was from an Ivy League or big name university.

Luckily my manager was an alumnus and recruited at my school. I would do the same if I was ever in the position to hire an intern.

Edit: I do want to say that I don’t think employers in tech would take a white male over an Indian or Asian man with the same qualifications.

In my university 60 % of the students are on financial aid and we ran into the same with our daughter’s tuition. Sadly she won’t qualify yet people from lower income families will.

You forget I went to university in the 90s. Things were much more challenging for women and minorities (and there weren’t many Asians and Indians back then) then in college, as I stated I earlier posts.

Like I said, people from poorer neighborhoods hurt my pocketbook because tuition is higher for the students who pay tuition to cover those on financial aid. So it's not easy for me and there are times I get frustrated and feel like race gets priority. But that's a mostly emotional outburst on my part.

Think about it from the perspective of a Black or Mexican person in a ghetto. What are your options? You can work in the fast food place or be a drug dealer. Who is going to make the most money and who will struggle financially? No good teachers want to go to the ghetto so the quality of education is poor. They tried to bus the kids from the ghetto into our schools in the 80s in the wealthier neighborhoods and of course the parents were outraged and changed that. So that didn't work.


Now Blacks in the 60s and before had more family units where the Dads stuck around. Then things changed and black men started skipping out on their kids.

Now in the Mexican culture getting a college education isn't seen as important as it is in other cultures. My parents pushed me to go to college as they were both college grads. Same with our daughter. Sometimes I'll wake up and worry what she will do if she doesn't get her degree.

So what does a Black or Mexican teenager do?

There may be someone at work who isn't performing but they are a white male. If the person is black then our minds will say "oh it's because of affirmative action". If the person is a black woman then we think that even stronger. That's an emotion. The white male doesn't stand out because it was always easier for him.
