I don't think there's a right or wrong answer so do what works for you. My dad retired at 62 and still works part time today because he enjoys it...he's 74 now. My mom retired at 70 and keeps busy doing all kinds of stuff...she's 75. They're constantly on the go together, doing all kinds of random stuff, mini trips, etc...they're so active and I think it's great!

They're happy and it makes me happy for them.

Working 40 hours a week does not mean you have no other free time. There are 168 hours in a week, subtract 56 hours for sleeping, and 40 hours for working, 7 hours for hygiene, 14 hours for cooking/eating, and you still have 51 hours of free time left.

You honestly telling me you're going to spend 51 hours on hobbies/personal interests with no downtime, and that if you didn't have a job, you'd spend 40 hours more?

91 hours a week on hobbies/personal interests? lmfao.

Guarantee any poser who says this will truly spend 20-30 hours and spend the rest of their time rotting or wasting it.

This is what I'm able to do with my full time job WFH:

Cook two nice meals each day
Hit the gym every day
Have sex any time
Hang out with friends
Go out on dates
Take weekend trips
Go to concerts or movies in the evenings
Learn about things I'm interested in during work
Trade the stock market during work
Play video games any time
Get a full eight hours of sleep
Go shopping whenever I need
Work from anywhere in the country
Don't have to stress about health insurance

What is retirement in my 40s/50s going to give me that I can't already do above?

Quote from Marcus Aurelius:
“At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: “I have to go to work — as a human being. What do I have to complain of, if I’m going to do what I was born for — the things I was brought into the world to do? Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm?”

So you were born to feel “nice”? Instead of doing things and experiencing them? Don’t you see the plants, the birds, the ants and spiders and bees going about their individual tasks, putting the world in order, as best they can? And you’re not willing to do your job as a human being? Why aren’t you running to do what your nature demands?

Quote from Marcus Aurelius:
That Aurelius quote is misleading in the way you present it.

The less advanced a civilization is the more human labor required.

"I have to go to work - as a human being" means collecting firewood, finding clean water, building a shelter, finding static food, building tools for mobile food, finding a possible mate, courting that mate, taking care of your mate, producing children and on and on but it does not mean being a slave to another man and helping him build his life by working for him and strengthening his family unit to a far greater degree than your own.

It's odd that you consider exchanging your skilled labor for money as slavery. Nobody is forcing you to work a job.

News flash - when you work for yourself, unless you're selling products to yourself and providing services to yourself and paying yourself, you are a "slave" to your customers.

If you are willing to take the risk of starting your own venture in order to get a larger slice of the pie then that's great, but to claim that you are strengthening your employer's family greater than your own as if it is an unequal transaction is laughable. Your employer expends far more capital and resources to provide you with that job and all you have to do is show up and do it. That's a heck of a bargain.

You honestly sound like one of those commies that expect an employer to not make any profit off your labor.

What is retirement in my 40s/50s going to give me that I can't already do above?

Quote from Marcus Aurelius:
I like you man, but holy fukking chit man. You have to be trolling now.

You're "full time job" is 10 hours a week and on top of that is work from home. You're working 10 hours a week in the cushest setup imagineable and are wondering why working stiffs putting in 50+ hours a week wanna get out of the rat race... You don't have to retire to get what everybody else that wants to retire early has-because you fukking have that. Your time estimate is also off by the way, you forgot commuting. And yeah, it'd be super awesome to backpack to through the Ozarks or kayak along a river after work, but uh squeezing that in after a10 hour day plus commute (one day, not a week) ain't exactly easy. And even if I could, yeah good luck in the dark and with traffic. Jesus.

And then to follow it up with a quote by an emperor about the virtues of doing what nature demands.....our "job" as a human being?!?! Just fukking LMAO. My "job" as a human being is to figure out a way to detach from this current system, to get my children on that same path so we end up giving as little support as possible (in labor, taxes, profit) to the fukkups in charge.

Retirement in your 40/50s is gonna be exactly like you have your life setup now I bet. There's absolutely nothing I would change. You have it good man..I'm sure you worked hard for it, so I won't knock it, but you have to understand that you're doing better than 99% of people right now. If you don't have kids right now, well there's another reason you are doing so well and have tons of freedom. If you wanna make your life a bit harder and more interesting without having to work more hours, have kids. 2 of them is 10x harder than 1 kid by the way. After that I'm not sure LMAO.

you are effectively retired now. if you have to go back to 40 hrs per week plus a commute are you doing that and not dreaming about being free again?

i could retire tomorrow but the longer I work the more money i can set aside for my kids, the more money i can use to fund hobbies, etc... leanfire does not appeal. If i was going to retire early, i would need more money than i have now to fill my days. i like to golf, work on my old car and motorcycle, i want to build a barndomimium to retire to so that;s going to cost. Luckily im in a situation similar to yours with working from home but my schedule and responsibilities aren't so lax.

Chances are I will go back to a 40 hour week job because this is just too much time for me. I like to be productive. I will say that when I had a 40 hour week job, I was still able to do the following:

Cook two nice meals each day
Hit the gym every day
Have sex any time
Hang out with friends
Go out on dates
Take weekend trips
Go to concerts or movies in the evenings
Learn about things I'm interested in during work
Trade the stock market during work
Play video games any time
Get a full eight hours of sleep
Go shopping whenever I need
Work from anywhere in the country
Don't have to stress about health insurance

So besides being unable to cook and instead having to meal prep, having to have sex outside of business hours, and having to trade the stock market, play video games, and learn about things outside of work, I still had it pretty good. Work on it's own is a chit deal if you're doing it to barely make ends meet and you live above your means. If you don't though? If you're financially free and go to work because you enjoy it? Why retire from that?

I used to work in refining and you'd be surprised how many people willingly came back to work after retirement despite not needing the money. Imagine spending all day surrounded by people who share a common interest and who are fun to be around, hard concept..

Maybe most people have chit jobs and that's where the disconnect is with me. For me, my jobs have been with good people and interesting work. I enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment at the end of each day, and of using my mind to do that by challenging myself.

Marcus Aurelius is absolutely correct, we aren't born to sit there and indulge in hedonistic pleasures for our entire life. We're part of the human race and it's our duty to devote ourselves to an ideal. Maybe modern day society has weakened people and convinced them to seek universal basic income so that they can lead degenerate rotting lifestyles, but that isn't me. Maybe I'm old fashioned and still believe in a collectivist lifestyle where we provide value to society, and that's the issue. Fuk society, right. Every man for himself.

Opie has me seriously reconsidering my life moves. 10 hours a week WFH with bennies has to be the best setup, maybe even better than ER because you get to offload your biggest expense to your employer.

Thought you were an engineer OP? Can't imagine an engineer having life this easy. GJDM.

I am. I went into a field where lots of people are retiring so I have the leverage of having specialized knowledge that not many have. Engineers are known for finding efficiencies in designs and products but I'm the one idiot who instead found efficiencies in his workflow so was able to work a lot less lmao.

Electrical? And you are nuts man. If you've a lot of coin and spare time and looking for a challenge, have you considered starting a business?

Electrical power, yea. Wouldn't know what business to start but I'm spending most of my time learning economics/finance and tech/programming over the next year or two.

In terms of employment I'm set for life, but I'm seeking something more difficult like tech where I can challenge myself and get a higher comp. I'm topped out at about $160k right now and it's bothering me seeing people 10 years younger pulling in $250k+.

ok you really understood nothing

in your wagecel brain, it's either commuting to work or WFH. you're so conditioned and ignorant that your brain can't comprehend other possibilities. It's ok, we need people like you in the workforce. yayy you

Let me spell it out for you again as slow as possible:

In this thread we're not comparing WFH vs going into an office. We're talking about retiremenet. But carry on, you have nothing to add to this discussion, enjoy WFH and fishing.

You're framing my views too simply but I'm not surprised lol.

Your worth is not a function of the skill of your labor but the rarity of your skills lol.

Everyone has to earn an income to pay their bills, unless you won the birth lottery, everyone is forcing you to work lol.

I can generate money on my own "island", I don't need a product or service sell, I don't need employees to take advantage of and I don't need a boss, I generate my own wealth and no one can stop me lol.

Like I said in a previous post, there are Amazon worker who produce $5,000/day in revenue right now for Jeff and then Jeff gives them a cut of $150, he don't care if it's rainin or snowin lol.

This has nothing to do with their labor but more supply and demand which is manipulated by forces beyond your control, like immigration and labor in alternative nations lol.

If you are dependent on someone else to provide for you and your family then you might as well sit in the corner and let your boss fuk your wife because none of what you done would be possible without a boss lol.

This would be like two separate family units where one family brings another family all the resources they gathered and then the other family gives them a cut of the labor due to leverage lol.

What exactly is your argument, because what you just typed looks like a giant disorganized word salad? lol

Do you even know what it means to be a slave? lol
a person who is forced to work for and obey another and is considered to be their property; an enslaved person.
lol

Explain which employer forces you to work for them? lol

Nearly 100 city Sanitation Department garbage collectors and supervisors hauled in more than $100,000 in overtime last year —pushing some of their yearly salaries to almost $300,000, payroll records show.
https://nypost.com/2021/12/12/94-nyc...k-in-overtime/

Garbage men aren't making $300K a year due to their skills lol.

They are still dependent slaves though.

Maybe even more so.

Garbage men aren't making $300K a year due to their skills lol.

They are still dependent slaves though.

Maybe even more so.
So you discovered the concept of supply and demand? Please, tell me more about this fascinating concept lol.

Of course I don't mean literal slave, I'm sure you have heard the term "wage slave", correct?

So skills are not as relevant as you make it appear, being skilled in labor does not make you special, you are still a (wage)slave.

Your master only pays you what he has to to get you to (wage)slave.

He is not paying you based on your labor, skill or anything else.

Also, that is not a disorganized word salad, I responded to your points one by one.

You are free to chase skills that are in demand and provide a higher return, nobody is born and forced into a particular skillset. Not sure what your point is?

You think you are free because you trade the stock market on a remote island and you don't report to anyone? Please tell me more about how you will generate income in a bearish market with low volatility or how you will generate income during a black swan event or how you will generate income if hyperinflation hits or how you will generate income if internet gets shut down or how you will generate income if the government heavily regulates the market in the future? Sounds like you are a slave to any of those outcomes.

You claimed working for someone else is slavery, then reneged that comment by saying you meant "wage slave". You're not fooling anyone, are you Wiseoldape's alt account? Exact same typing style, posing as a edgy intellectual.

I've seen you in the Trading/Investing threads and I actually responded to you saying NVDA would go to $600 after it popped to $500 on good news.

Do you remember what I told you?

Don't do it, please don't do it, or something like that lol.

If you read what I wrote, I said I did not buy $600C, and not because you suggested not to.

Can you read?

You're honestly not free to chase other training and opportunities on the company's dime.

I've seen people study for certification exams while they are supposed to be "working" and I then I don't have that certification, but is that fair to the company? Of course it helps their career more, but to me if I'm bored I would ask for more work, but there always is work to be done so I will ask my manger what should I prioritize.
