You can do that but only at locally owned repair shops, not dealerships. Years ago when I owned a Jetta I bough an aftermarket starter and fuel pump for the car when they needed to be replaced. Gave it to the mechanic, and he installed it only charging for the labor, and they worked for the remainder of the time I owned the car.

Anyone who takes their car to a dealership shop unless the car is under warranty is a fool.

Not to mention how dumb and $hitty people are these days trying to ruin somebodies livelihood via social media if they throw a fit and dont get their way.

Buys defective pipe or fittings.... $hit leaks and causes major damage... 3.7 seconds later homo-ner hits ever social media platform with

"do NOT use *insert company here* , they overcharge and do $hit work"

What really cracks me up about reading this kind of stuff is its generally people who simply CANT do the job themselves because they are limp wristed dullards with a MBA in Lesbian Basket Weaving with a minor in Suggestive Dance Theory...

End of the day you really are down to 2 or three options

STFU and do it yourself....

STFU and pay somebody to do it....

or...

Just STFU and deal with it as is...
Seems like the happy medium is the following:

- contractor gets paid labor
- contractor buys the parts and shows receipts to homeowner
- homeowner pays $150 or whatever one-time mark up fee for the shopping, gas, etc on top of what the receipt says

He tells me that works and gives me an estimate reflecting this.

A couple days later, I call him with my credit card ready to go. He tells me his boss told him I can't supply the materials and they'll only do it if they supply the materials. Maximum bait and switch.

Do you know how much 60' of perforated PVC pipe costs? It costs $54 max at full retail price. They would like to charge me $700 for supplying $54 of pipe. That is a 1,300% mark up. This company literally went back on what they told me just so they can charge me 1,300% on materials. Fkn lol.

Just wrote this idiot an email telling him I don't want his pipe and to fist himself lol. Unbelievable.
Lol you're leaving out materials.

You don't know what quality they are using.

You don't have all the facts.

100 feet of basic pipe is 128 plus tax.

You also need sock

You need gravel

You might need connections

Are they putting in a box?

This used to be true but these days its almost becoming best to take late model cars to the dealership because you need alot of their brand specific tools to complete any job.

Was quoted 22k, 15, and 20k for a patio paver install. I think contractors just make up numbers.

I can source all materials, tools, rentals, for about 6500 and that's buying a cut off saw because a rental was 1/3 ofb the entire cost of one. I'm going to do it myself.

Hell yea dude. If you're any kind of handy/have the ability (and the time) to do this type of stuff, it's the way to go. Watch some YouTube videos, look at some pics online for inspiration and get after it. It probably wont be perfect, but you'll learn a lot and you'll have the pride knowing you did it yourself. Not to mention save a ton of money.

My neighbor paid a contractor to build a cover for his back patio and told me he paid $10k....they did it in 3 days....he got 3 posts & a shingled roof (at way to low of a pitch for shingles by the way) that's about 12 x 16 for 10k.

Im in the process of building a cover for my side patio that's 16x25 and installing electrical/fan/lights, a built in outdoor kitchen with grill, prep space, mini fridge, a flat top griddle, and a bar on the backside with space for 4 barstools, a 50" TV & an open brick fireplace complete with chimney......and I'll be in it for about $6500-$7k (including buying the new grill, TV, flat top and fridge).......the downside is finding the time and I'm doing it all myself. A Contractor buddy of mine told me he'd probably charge between $18-$22k and could do it in 2 weekends.
