you are closer to being homeless than you are to owning a house on Martha's Vineyard. But remember,

60 minutes did a segment on insider trading after Martha Stewart . It’s funny AF because later on they did a second show on insider trading and interviewed a politician . They asked him how his net worth increased exponentially, to which he admitted because of insider trading.
They ask him how as it’s illegal,to which he replied politicians are exempt .

Most people in the NE have inherited wealth. Not to say people can't also earn it, but a place like Martha's Vineyard is mostly passed down.

Very few people go completely from rags to riches. The average "self made" person comes from a family with a really good foundation.

yeah i think those getting into the $40M+ net worth area are about 0.1% of the population and a huge chunk of those inherited some wealth. if assumptions are right than probably .0025% of regular people get there.

now i can say i know one...my cousin went from borderline poverty to a net worth of 70-80m but he just happened have the genetics to throw a baseball at an elite level.

Have you seen how much real estate and the stock market went up over the last 30 years? Key was to just be sort of rich in the early 90s then as you die off around now you are VERY rich and your heirs suddenly have tons of money.

No real places of employment there. You have to take the ferry to get to Martha's Vineyard. My oldest daughter is a manager of an entire floor for a big OBGYN clinic. She has to go there every summer for a long weekend for manager meetings/seminars. The head doctor at the clinic has a home there and that's where they go...It's the doctor's secondary home/summer residence...

Some do, but it's rare. E.g. top lawyers, high level engineers in tech, top traders.

I don't follow that so I have no idea what that is. My daughter has been going there every summer for over a decade and she fukin hates it. It's mandatory so she doesn't have a choice if she wants to keep her job...

This. I know a couple families with houses there and it's all inherited money. The "kids" who are in their 40s now, and their parents, who are in their 70s/80s literally never had to work a day in their life. I grew up with one of these guys and he was fun to hang around with, always cool stuff to do. Had cellphone in his parents car in the late 80s, always taking vacations, going to sports events, etc. Fun life. These folks generally do some "charity" work a few days a month, possibly as a tax write-off and to give it the appearance that they kind of have a job. But 99% of the time they literally just do whatever TF they want.

Age plays a factor. It isn't just how much they make, but how long they have been making it for.

Median age Los Angeles = 37
Median age Martha's Vineyard = 53

They are very successful and havebeenvery successful for 20, 30 or 40 years. We aren't talking about first time buyers here.

As to how people make that money without inheriting it? If you want a result in the top 0.01%, you have to be in the top 0.01% at something and monetize it.

In general, ordinary people have ordinary outcomes. If you want an extraordinary outcome, you need to be extraordinary.

They aren't all like that. Not everybody is Obamas there. My brother in law's family has a small place there. Apparently enough to build more on the land. His grandfather bought it decades ago. Didn't hurt that his grandfather was a high ranking federal official at the time I'm sure.
