Most people in the NE have inherited wealth. Not to say people can't also earn it, but a place like Martha's Vineyard is mostly passed down.
Very few people go completely from rags to riches. The average "self made" person comes from a family with a really good foundation.

yeah i think those getting into the $40M+ net worth area are about 0.1% of the population and a huge chunk of those inherited some wealth. if assumptions are right than probably .0025% of regular people get there.
now i can say i know one...my cousin went from borderline poverty to a net worth of 70-80m but he just happened have the genetics to throw a baseball at an elite level.

Have you seen how much real estate and the stock market went up over the last 30 years? Key was to just be sort of rich in the early 90s then as you die off around now you are VERY rich and your heirs suddenly have tons of money.

Age plays a factor. It isn't just how much they make, but how long they have been making it for.
Median age Los Angeles = 37
Median age Martha's Vineyard = 53
They are very successful and havebeenvery successful for 20, 30 or 40 years. We aren't talking about first time buyers here.
As to how people make that money without inheriting it? If you want a result in the top 0.01%, you have to be in the top 0.01% at something and monetize it.
In general, ordinary people have ordinary outcomes. If you want an extraordinary outcome, you need to be extraordinary.

They aren't all like that. Not everybody is Obamas there. My brother in law's family has a small place there. Apparently enough to build more on the land. His grandfather bought it decades ago. Didn't hurt that his grandfather was a high ranking federal official at the time I'm sure.
