Xbox claims its next console will be ‘the largest technical leap you will have ever s
...
Xbox has confirmed that the current Xbox Series X|S consoles will not be the company’s last.
Speaking during a podcast on the future of the Xbox business, Xbox president Sarah Bond made reference to the next generation of Xbox hardware and claimed it would be “the largest technical leap you will have ever seen in a hardware generation”.
Before the podcast was published, some fans were expressing concern on social media that reports of Xbox’s plans to bring some of its games to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles may have been a sign that it was exiting the hardware business. Bond’s comments, however, appeared to be designed to allay those fears.
“There’s some exciting stuff coming out in hardware that we’re going to share this holiday”, she said, “and we’re also invested in the next generation roadmap.
“And what we’re really focused on there is delivering the largest technical leap you will have ever seen in a hardware generation, which makes it better for players, and better for creators and the visions that they’re building.”
Bond explained that hardware is still a core part of the Xbox development process because the Xbox Game Studios teams can help define the specs of the next Xbox hardware, enabling them to build their games around it.
“Our developers can build the specs of our hardware, and we invest to make sure when they do that the games are going to run great on our hardware,” she said.
“But they’re also going to be able to be accessed across any screen because of all the other investments we make. So we’re giving them an easy way to access as many players as possible.”
As part of its statement on the future of the Xbox business, an article on the Xbox blog states that Xbox consoles “will continue to provide a flagship experience for players”.
It also notes that Game Pass “will continue to be only available on Xbox platforms”, essentially shooting down suggestions that it may come to PlayStation or Nintendo systems in the future.

Honestly I could not be less excited. We're at the point of major diminishing returns.

And it'll still be MOGGED by a PC running a 3080.
Consolecels never seem to realize what real tech is. LOL at thinking $500 will get you powerful hardware.

In general pro versions are retarded, at least the way they've handled them in the past. I'm not going to buy a console on release, then buy a pro version 3 years later, then buy the next gen 3-4 years after that, when I can just use the same console for 7 years without buying 2. If standard and pro versions were both available on release, I think many more people (myself included) would buy the pro version.

The problem with pro is people are delusional thinking it's some magnificent upgrade.

A $900 - $1200 PC is about a PS5 equivalent, if not a bit more.
You want MOGGER specs, gotta spend $2500 minimum.

Also didn't we all complain that the existence of the series S put a huge strain on the potential of the Series X and next gen games in general? It meant that all xbox and 3rd party games needed to work on that weak system so it definitely strong-armed the beginning of the gen. Not only that but things will get far worse for the latter half of the gen. There will be gamers with 5090 GPUs playing games that have to work on the series S. That's brutal. I much prefer Sony's method of releasing the pro midway thru, that way we can get a pro model that's closer to best PCs at the time.

Q: Do you have any news about some sort of mid-generation refresh for Xbox?
PS: No, no. We're doing right now the increased storage on the Series S. But no, like I said, we're kind of at the end of the beginning in my mind. So I think we need to let devs settle on this hardware and get the most out of it. But in terms of increased frame rate, increased resolution, I just look at what goes on on PC with high-end GPUs, high-end CPU, and it's not always just about pixel count or frame resolution. I think there's lighting techniques. There's a bunch of things that go into what makes a game look and feel great. And we have a ton of headroom as an industry there.

The same problem with the "holiday hardware" applies here: there are no games.
What good is evenmorehardware if there's nothing worthwhile to play in order to justify its very existence?
It's like this with their ongoing fetish with releasing a new controller every time your turn around.
Who is buying all of these fücking controllers and for what perverse reason?
The people in charge are/have beenutter morons, just the same as the rest of Microsoft's entire personal computing segment. Now it just feels like they're trying to gaslight the type of poor sods who have the Dune 2 controller on preorder into thinking that Satya Nadella doesn't have a shotgun pointed to the back of everyone's heads in the Xbox division telling them do be more like Activision because that's literally the reason they were anywhere close to being in the black last quarter.
That isn't to say this entire "generation" hasn't been a joke for games, but Microsoft has been in this same position for over an entire generation of hardware already and still bumble around as though the idea of a video game console having worthwhile video games to play is some kind of extraordinary ask from consumers.

They already sell the new hardware at a lossdespitebeing less powerful than better available PC hardware, while having to book supplies and production to meet anticipated demand.
A higher spec sku is throwing a practically unprecedented monkey wrench into that for console makers, especially because of the unknown demand for a sticker shock sku that could just as easily have far less demand or far too much, thus impacting the supplies.
They have a much better idea of demands later in the console's life cycle, and they have a better understanding of what can be optimized or improved feature wise. Just look at how the new slim PS5s were an adjustment to cooling and optimization; they now have real world data to confirm their design choices and can work from there.
I can also imagine the marketing nightmare if there's a console that is substantially more powerful because you know damn well that companies will use that for their marketing instead of what most people have on hand.
Unlike PCs where not only do you go in knowing that it's whateveryourhardware can run, but also that upgrading a single component like the GPU is at least an option. It's not nearly as practical for most people (or easy to justify) to try selling their entire used console for much less and then shelling out a ton more for an essentially identical product beyond the bumped up specs. They would have to redesign the entire thing to allow upgrading anything beyond the storage space, which might not be a bad thing for consumers if they could pop in a better GPU, but that could possibly jack up the cost of the base product to accommodate upgradeability.
I will stand firm, I refuse to kneel - The fury in me is divine
My dark grave awaits, my fate is revealed - But I'm not afraid to die
If you have any problems or need advice, feel free to ask

So now 4 years have passed, tech has improved a bunch and Sony discovered many things that were good about the launch system and many things that weren't. As you said, cooling was vastly reduced in size. Another thing I'd add is we discovered that raytracing would be a far bigger deal than we thought at the start of the gen. So much so that Sony will have to implement their own hardware raytracing. Even their AI upscaling that's rumored.
This will allow the pro to now have roughly the power of a 4070...around twice what the original PS5 could do if you factor in everything...for the cost of what, 500-600? That would be amazing value and something that was only possible with 4 extra years of advancement and planning.

A Pro version released on day 1 would be $700 easy. People ain't.
And your argument really doesn't make sense because if they release a pro version, they're gonna release a pro pro version that's even stronger.

Build a PC folks. Sony releasing games on it is justification to going all out and building a $4500 5090. Not to mention being able to run 3rd party games at max settings

They would feel like 2nd class citizens and Sony would get dragged hard by the backlash. It's much better to do this a few years later when the base console is much older, give it a price cut and say hey, time has passed and as you can see new games aren't running well on your once top box anymore so here's an upgrade with newer tech.It makes perfect sense. You just said that most people just buy the base model and never upgrade. They don't upgrade because they don't want to pay for the same generation of console twice when they are both running the same games. However if they can get performance benefits with a pro version and it's available on the generation's release so they don't have to buy 2 consoles, a lot more people would actually buy a pro version.
As for the Series S thing, that's different. Series X was a standard console, Series S was the lite version. If they had Series X for $500 and Series X Pro for $750 I would bet a significantly higher portion than 15% would opt for the pro. I know I would.

Also, as I said before, $750 in 2020 wouldn't have gotten you much because PS5 uses AMD tech which is a gen behind Nvidia. When it comes to stuff like Raytracing and so on, AMD didn't have good solutions at the time. Essentially 4 years later $750 could get you much more now that tech has advanced and more importantly the industry has had more time to see where the tech is going. None of us knew at the start how huge RT and Unreal 5 would impact this gen and that's why RT was absolutely atrocious on base consoles. Now we have a much clearer idea and can develop a box that's far more focused on where the trend has gone.
