Also, my wife insists I shouldn't own a boat since I can't swim. Is this accurate? I feel like the whole point of a boat is to avoid being in the water, no?

Boat looks tidy, should be good if family of 4 for day trips. More might be a problem especially if anyone wants to bring friends.

But you should really learn to swim. You don't need to swim olympic freestyle but I'd want to be able to tread water and do the survival strokes before I went on the water. Seems wild to me, I suppose you wear a life jacket religiously then would be ok though.

When weeds or rope get stuck in your propeller, you’re going to want to know how to swim if you have to get in the water to clear it, if you have to.

Personal experience, in my old boat, I was able to trim the motor up enough to get it from in the boat. That boat, doesn’t look like you can do that with. I had an outboard motor.

Also, boats have a fk ton of hidden costs. There is a saying, “the two happiest days in a boat owners life are the day he buys it, and the day he sells it.” This legit couldn’t be more true. I had so much extra cash laying around after I sold my boat it was ridiculous.

Try joining Freedom Boat Club. You pay a membership fee and take their boats out, they take care of everything. If after two year of doing that you still think you want to own your own boat, then go for it.

Do not buy a boat unless you know with 100% certainty that you'll use it frequently.

Just rent when you want to get out in the water, or like another poster said, join a boat club where you have access to a variety of boats at your discretion.

My grandpa had a similar boat when I was growing up, that style has always been my favorite.
My buddy who’s a big family guy wants to go for a pontoon boat, but they have a close friend who lets them use their lake house and boat/jet skis off LBJ.
Definitely learn to swim though dude srs. Been multiple people who drowned locally who were hanging at the lake and went too deep and died because no one in their group could swim.

I've saved many vids of people who don't know how to swim, go into water deeper than they can stand.





Theres a reason the vids get passed around. And its not because everyone gets thrown a flotation ring and everyone lives happily ever after.....









Growing up around lakes and being on the swim team, I cannot fathom how people aren't able to swim. It feels so natural. If you don't know how to swim, you better take lessons, or you WILL sink like a fukkin rock after 10 seconds of flailing around while you start going down (from what I've seen)

Also, you want to be friends with someone who has a boat or rent one for an afternoon. You don't want to own one unless you need it for transportation or go fishing every weekend. Recreational use means it sits parked 99% of the time and then you take a massive L when you sell it to the next sucker.

I live on a lake and have my own dock in the yard. Bought my boat 4 years ago, haven't gone a single season without some sort of multi thousand dollar repair bill.

If I had to do it again, id get a pontoon, bunch of my neighbors have them and have encountered very few problems over the years.

You either get a reliable floating dockthats slow as fuk

Or you get a proper boat that can go fast and pull tubers / skis / wakeboards etc. but its a more refined vehicle, with more repairs








I grew up with a 16 foot glasstron and chitty 2 HP fishing boat for smaller lakes with engine restrictions, and pontoons are only really good for sitting in the middle of a lake and pretending you're standing on a dock. To drink away from people is pretty much the only thing they are good for. NOT for entertaining fast cruising a lake at 60 MPH, or having fun on (aka towing).

You're required by law to have a life vest in the boat for every passenger. You don't necessarilyhaveto know how to swim, but it's probably a good idea to learn

From personal experience that is a small boat. My best friends, a family of 4, bought a 19ft boat and promptly upgraded after realizing is was too small. Not only that, but those smaller boat slap the waves hard and don't ride the best. I would seriously consider a 23ft+ option.

Howdy....

If it were me, and I was truly serious about buying a family boat, I think that it would be quite irresponsible of me to not know how to swim confidently first.
IMO...swimming lessons are in order here.

I've also read many posts about the expense of the ongoing maintenance required.
But, if someone has that disposable income and uses it frequently I can see the family fun factor.

But....that's just me.
