This is probably bad news for Trump.
Dems just need to run someone with no major skeletons and it will be a pretty close race.
Like it or not 60% of the country will never vote for Trump due to politics, crass + rude personality, old age, Jan 6, or just because that's what the TV tells them to do.
Of course that's assuming the Dems don't implode in the next month with massive power struggles as multiple factions struggle to get their guy as the candidate.

All they have to do is be all the things Trump is not. Not populist, not rude and crass, not 78 years old, not associated with Jan 6, not in the paper with multiple lawsuits and convictions.
Dems and dem-leaning-independents aren't voting "for" anyone. They're voting "against" Trump.

Dem voters want anybody but Trump. They're scared of him and they hate his guts, so the Dem nominee literally doesn't matter. They'll vote for a skeleton over Trump

Maybe they didn't like Biden, they saw he was old. They saw his speeches. But in their eyes he was the better option over Trump. If Biden changed his mind tomorrow and was the nominee Dems would 100% vote for him.

It is possible to be populist without being popular - for example, RFK Jr the 3rd party candidate could be considered populist but has no chance of winning the popular vote.
On the other hand George W. Bush would not be considered "populist" since he was very pro-establishment but won 2 terms in office and is still favorably regarded by many voters.
